    >now it wont even turn the engine on !
Not much to go on. Why change the two items you mentioned? Did you have a diagnostics check. It you say it does not turn the engine you need to say more ....battery.....lights work..... ALSO a very big NO NO is that you have changed the ECU. So the ignition key wont be recognised and the immobliser will also kick in. I think the ECU has to be programmed to the vehicle.

Try the astra forums on the web. http://www.cavweb-forums.co.uk/
  • hithanks for the reply, dont know why the ecu was changed ........but will check the link you gave..... oh gosh looks like we shoudlnt of changed the ecu !!

is there power going to the fuel pump solenoid? is there any smoke coming out the exhaust when turning over? is it turning over fast enough? are there any fuel leaks? does it start using easy start or similar? are the glow plugs working?

Does it, or did it before ECU change turn the engine at all?

What **exactly** were/are the symptoms when you sat in the car and turned they key?
  • The ECU will need to be programmed, probably...
  • hi, many for all the replies but what happened was we went out drove back parked the car and the next morning it wouldnt start, turn nothing just dead., no smoke, and will check if power is going to the solenoid pump !! but will check everything you have said "goldspanner" many thanks and will keep u up dated on the vehicle techinican that comes tomorrow.

What about dash lights, did the display light up?

First thing I would have done would be to try a jump start with jump leads to another car. Or check the battery voltage with a voltmeter. It would be unusual for the battery to die overnight but not impossible. especially if you left the radio or boot open slightly.

You might get away with refitting the old ECU and not have to reformat it.
  • we do need more info before pointing in the right area on this im afraid.
so as far as i gather the engine doesnt turn over.
why on earth was the ECU changed and the crankshaft sensor before any real diagnosis was done.
what were the exact symptoms before the ECU and crankshaft sensors were changed?

  • Connect a voltmeter across each glowplug and check for 12V (will only be there for a few seconds).

Also check the fusebox for a fuse for the glow plug relay/timer.

Also check for any leaks in the system, including around the main fuel filter. There isn't much that can stop a diesel from running.
  • hi, everyone unfortunately cant give exact info will send another thread explaining what happened when hubby gets back from his course tomorrow night, many thanks for all the replies and hope to get it running asap !!!
