Rice cookers - yes or no

This week Aldi are getting rice cookers in for a tenner and I wondered what you lot thought about them?
Are they worth ten of my hard earned squids?
Anyone have one? Love it? Loathe it? Used it once and never seen it again?

I have an electric steamer that I was going to start cooking my rice in - we eat quite a bit. I also like the idea of bagging cooked ric up with portions of chilli, curry etc for frozen ready meals.

Thanks Nix, I was going to ask the very same question! They must be some use because Aldi have them on a regular basis, I've just got so many things in my kitchen, mind you I use most of them regularly.
  • argos has one at offer at the mo for £9.99. oh is picking me one up later as i HATE cooking rice!
    'They only had one cow!'
  • I saw these and did wonder- though with Aldi if they don't do what they should htey are generally quite good at refunding...

I bought a £19.99 "cheapy" named brand from Lakeland after Xmas- it was "OK" cooked the rice but left a "crust" of burnt yuk on the base that you had to avoid...I returned it and bought the 4in 1 tefal (rice cooke/steamer/porridge/slow cooker). It is awesome and I use it daily, often 2xday (porridge in the morning and rice or steam at night) with occ slow cooking as well. It was  £39.99 though...

I do love my rice cooker and use it a lot (trying to get back to SW now so very good for this). It cooks the loveliest brown basmati rice. Not sure if the aldi one would be up to much but as long as "it is burning the rice it there must be a problem" sounds a reasonable reason to return it I think you'd be OK to risk £10...

  • I've been looking at rice cookers and wondered do they cook pasta as well? Do they keep the rice warm for a while?

  • ---Money saving tip---Use your pans girls

Take 1 cup of rice, 2 cardamine<sp> seed and place in saucepan add two spoons of oil and heat up to brown off add another cup of rice a little salt, stir, add to cover boiling water to pan. Simmer for a while adding more water to cover.

I donot cook ever! I would go without but even I can do this having watched wifey do it.

I have the Breville one which costs £24.99 from Argos. A friend recommended this one to me and she had tried several.

I love it. The rice is gorgeous and not all soggy as my rice always seemd to be. I have tried white long grain, basmati and brown rice. All good.

I also bought a rice cooker book which has lots of lovely recipes in it. I have made a lovely spicy tomatoe rice. I have alos made porridge in it, using apple juice and dried fruit, also from the book ... fantastic!

A nice tip from my friend was to cook the rice, as per the instructions then when it is cooked, make a few holes with the end of a wooden spoon ans pop a knob of butter in each. This melt and seeps down to the base. During the 10 mins standing time which the rice needs, this forms a lovely buttery crust on the base. If you then turn the rice out onto a plate, you get a sort of rice 'cake' which is delicious.

    Hope this helps.
