Nationwide Debit Card Question.

Have had a problem transfering some money into this account from my HSBC current account, but my question is...... the Debit card has a Visa emblem on it, what does this mean, i thought this card was for Nationwide only, i am confused as to what this all means,(will visa charge me for using this card,) and after talking to Nationwide they were getting into a knot themselves, could some one please explain simply what the Visa part of this card does...
can i withdraw cash/euros on htis card.....
(we have put £700 on this card for our holiday spending after reading Martins tips on spending abroad.

many thanks..

If you have a NW debit card it is a Visa debit card. Visa handle payments using the card, think about it, Nationwide don't have access to all the tills and ATMs in the world, somebody who does needs to be an agent for them.

You can withdraw cash from your NW current account using your NW debit card with no charge from Nationwide or Visa (the ATM owner might impose a fee though).

    Does that help?
  • This is not an answer to your question.

I have applied for a credit card from Marks & Spencer Financial Services plc.
You might think that this has got something to do with Marks and Spencer ...
    ... but read on:-

I actually got the card from Marks and Spencer Money
which is the trading name of Marks and Spencer Financial Services plc
which is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of HSBC Bank plc

The card itself is call &MORE

I can't remember whether it is a Visa Card or A Mastercard.

    Thanks Galstonian,
that sheds light on things, when the HSBC transfered the funds across they put it in the Visa part of this card??? instead of the flexa account,
this has caused major problems with hsbc blaming the NW and visa versa, they won't talk directly to each other so i have had to act as go between, it has taken all day to sort this out and i'm fed up with the hassle.......wishing i hadn't bothered now..

it should be sorted by tomorrow, with the NW transferring the funds BACK to the hsbc before the hsbc can have another go at putting then money into the right account......this doesn't inspire confidence in the banking world, is it any wonder people don't want to move their accounts when even the simplist of things get messed up, and then it's the customer who has to sort it all out.......

What do you mean that they transferfed it on to the Visa part of the card? The money should just go into the Flex Account then you use the card to get to is using any ATM just like a regular cash card.

What is the balance of your Flex Account at the moment? I am assuming you have opened a flex account rather than a Nationwide Visa card?

The Balance is Zero, we have never used this card before. We got it for our holiday, so we put £700 in it 10 days ago, but it never got there?

This is a NW flexa account Debit Card, the NW are being really helpful, but the hsbc couldn't care less, they say the money has gone to an account, ie the BIG number across the middle of the card, i thought the money should of gone to the account number which is on the bottom of the card....

it is very confusing, i think that the hsbc have messed up but don't want to admit it, so they are being very difficult.

    I think I see what's gone wrong.

There are two sorts of card that most people have - the debit card and the credit card. The debit card is a token representing a bank account. The credit card is a token representing a credit account. The way you send money to a bank account is slightly different to the way you send money to a credit account.
    • A bank account has a sort code and an account number that uniquely identifies it in the system used to transfer money between bank accounts - the Bank Automated Clearing System, or BACS. To send to a bank account, you have to specify only its sort code and account number. These numbers are often on the bottom of the debit card. If they are not, look on an account statement or a cheque for the account.
    • A credit account doesn't exist as an entity in the BACS system. Instead, to get money to a credit account, you send it to the bank account of the credit card provider, with further instruction that the credit card provider should put that money against one of its numbered credit accounts. The number of the credit account is the long number you see across the middle of a card – the Personal Account Number, or PAN. You give this PAN as a third piece of information called the reference.
When you said to HSBC, "Please transfer £700 to this card", they must have got the type of card wrong. They sent the money as if it were a credit card, not a debit card. Your money has been languishing in a bank account belonging to Nationwide Credit Card Services, who would have no idea what to do with it. It would have eventually been sent back whether you'd chased it or not.

Personally, I find that Nationwide are far more likely to be helpful than one of the big four banks, regardless of what's happened or whose fault it is.

There may also be another explanation. I once had a misunderstanding with NW when some money that I transfered from another bank failed to arrive in my flex acc. It was explained that because NW is still a building society, there is a generic account attached to everybody's bank account. IE, the money first goes into NATIONWIDES account, & is then distributed to individual accounts, so it is imperative that you give the sort code AND the account number, not the card number. It seems a strange way of doing things to me, but NW do have many odd ways of banking ( have you ever tried to pay a credit card bill in a branch?????) Thank god for internet banking. The money did reach my account eventually though

Nationwide have now given up trying to get our money back, they have tried there best to sort out a problem that wasn't of there making. NW have said that the hsbc operator has put this money into a NW CREDIT car account with the NW credit card services, which is completely different to where the money was suppose to go ( ie our flex account). It is indisputable that the mistake was made by the hsbc operator.
NW say to tell the hsbc to do a forward track on the money what ever that means/ what ever that will achieve.
But it will be Monday now till we can do anything.
How is the best way to complain about this,( some one has suggested that if you make a big enough stink, they have a type of slush fund which they can use to re-inburse money while they sort out these type of things,) has anybody heard of such a thing.

    Any suggestions please...
