TalkTalk and Override Providers

Hi all,

I've just connected to Talk Talk International 2 with free broadband. This means my line rental goes through them and not BT.

I'd like to use override providers for weekday calls to landlines and all calls to mobiles, 0845 and 0870. Obviously I can't use short-code prefixes (as they don't allow them) but I can use access numbers.

Does anyone know how I can tell how much TalkTalk will charge for using 0844 and 0871 numbers? They aren't listed on the published table of rates. I know they charge a fair bit more than BT on these types of call but can't find the actual information anywhere.

In an ideal world the Call Checker utility on the main site would have an option for who your line rental is with - til then I need some help before I can even begin working out what to do.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I too am with TT. I think you should consider holding the following link in your favourites:-

    http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php

This site allows you to enter either the phone number or company name, and it throws up a regional number, or wherever possible, the free 0800 number. I recently was more-or-less forced to take out insurance on a mobile phone, with an 0870 number. Via the site I mentioned, I found both regional & 0800. You could keep a list of the numbers you are likely to use frequently, that would save time looking them up.

I don't know how much the international 2 scheme costs, but I pay £9.95 for all free calls, 24/7 and BB is free. Could you consider changing ?

I'm on Talk talk internet plus International call package. This is fine we use it to call relatives in Europe and get the calls free(after dialling 18418).
Problem is we've just had a bill in from Christmas with 2 long calls to South Africa.45 or 50p a minute Ouch!! We didn't dial 18418(The talk talk prefix) before it because we didn't think it would work for South Africa.

Now looking into using one of these direct dial companies after using the international call checker. Comes in nicely at 1P per minute to call a landline in South Africa.

My question is does talk talk charge (say 5p) a minute for every minute we are on the 0844 or 0845 number? That would make the true cost of the call 6p a minute or whatever.
It states on the Talk talk website that dialling the 18418 number first will reduce the price to 5p per minute.
So I think dialling the companies listed on MSE callchecker will not benefit me, am I correct?

Talk Talk now in fact charge the same rates as BT to call Non Geographical Numbers. So the call would cost 6p connection plus whatever the rate is in the callchecker,if you dial the 0844 access number direct. You start paying for the call as soon as you hear the welcoming announcement.

If you had a Talk Talk Global Package you could call South Africa for 3p a minute using the 18418 access number.
  • Thanks for the response.

Where did you read that Talk Talk charge the same as BT for NGN?

A 6p connection charge then the standard rates would be wonderful. However the call tariff list you linked to shows that they charge up to 10p/min for dialling NGN.

I guess my question is this...how do I know if my chosen carriers number is charged as G6, G7,...G28? The list shows only these rather cryptic names. Any ideas?

    Thanks again guys.

The all use the codes (g6 etc.) shown on the BT Specialised Numbers Price List.

However, I'm not sure Talk Talk does charge the same as BT - the rates, for example, for g22 numbers (½p/minute incl. VAT at all times) are not shown on that Talk Talk list.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks Heinz,

I'd just found the bt specialised price list myself (it hadn't occured to me that these codes were industry wide until today).

I was about to point out g22 numbers for the following reason...

When the line is not provided by BT the 0p/min deals offered by 18185 etc no longer apply as you must use their 0808 access number, thereby increasing the rate to 1p/min. The cheapest solution therefore appeared to be 0.5p/min offered by "0.5p".

As this is a g22 number I can't find out how much it will cost on Talk Talk. Does anyone know how much it would be or even if it is available? I understand Talk Talk have been barring some other providers' numbers so I wouldn't be surprised if it's simply unavailable.

Thanks again for all your help guys. I'm just looking forward to programming my Orchid and not worrying about dialing the correct prefix any more.

    Hi all,

I too am on talk talk 3 option (just changed from international as i don't call abroad) and get free broadband and free calls day and night to landlines which costs me £7.49 + BT line rental. My question is, because of the 5p connection charge and 10p per minute call to mobiles, is it worth me changing to an override provider (i checked out all the ones mentioned and this was the cheapest because not via a BT line!). I then checked my bill on talk talk and this is a sample of what i pay now -

    duration
    00:00:51 - 0.155
    00:00:52 - 0.155
    00:01:22 - 0.175
    00:00:39 - 0.115
    00:01:40 - 0.260
    00:01:05 - 0.260

 it looks about the same to me, but I just want to check with someone else as I do make mistakes and could be reading it wrong. I don't want to get another provider or anything just in case?

Anyone else use talk talk and get the same prices?

    Thanks for your help,

If your on Talk 3 with Free ? Broadband and inclusive calls not free surely you pay your line rental to Talk Talk not BT.

If thats the case their are a number of 0871 access numbers you could use from Talk Talk to make mobile calls where the connection charge should be 6p and the calls should be 6p a minute.See:

Hi, thanks for this, but when I checked, the calls are not 6p per minute, only when it is through a BT direct line (not talk talk, NTL, etc), via the 0871 numbers it is 10p per minute and 5p connection charge. (I have just received an email from 1899.com, which i have copied below):

this is the rate list for calls if you are a non BT customer. A 4p connection fee applies to all international calls and 5p to all national calls.

    UK rates p/min

    UK fixed lines 1
    UK mobiles (sat/sun) 3
    UK mobiles (weekdays) 10
    UK (070 Personal) 15
    UK (0845 Local) 4
    UK (0870 National) 7

Sorry, I put BT line rental as although i pay it to Talk Talk, it is still the same BT charge:mad: . In total I pay £18 and get calls to all landline numbers all day and weekends at no charge plus free broadband access. because of this, i try to get the kids to phone their friends at home rather than on their mobiles, but you know how that doesn't work!

This is why it seems to me that I am better off just sticking to talk talk, although I could use 1899.com at weekends, as their rate drops to 3p. what do you think?

    Thanks again for your help,
