A few people have pointed out that he should visit the universities - get on campus, look in the halls etc - When I chose which uni to go to, I went on gut-feel, and I felt it was one of the best decisions I ever made!0

Visit them - way up the odds ie location, halls, course etc. I knew my favourite after viewing 4 unis and I'm 100% glad I chose Roehampton. My decisions was based on: wanted to be in London but not too central (am SW15), I loved the halls, really liked the course & it would be a straight 2 hour train journey home.0

Do visit, try to talk to students when you're there. Do they look happy, is there much interaction with the staff. See what's the department like in general, is there up to date student work displayed. If it's a technical course ask they have accreditation from the relevant industry body (as students have the chance to gain student membership to these. Gut feel, as everyone else has said, is also crucial).0

Don't normally post on student pages, but this grabbed my attention. I have actually graduated a couple of years and I did Economics and Maths, but one of my best friends did EEE and he really enjoyed it. The dept was well run, helpful and he did really well he also walked in to a very good job plus he had a great time doing it. The engineering department is highly thought of in general and a lot of students from elsewhere, especially ireland, study there.
As has been mentioned above Strathclyde is in the centre of Glasgow, the university life, e.g. sports and other clubs etc are very good and is a very social uni. The halls are all good quality (especially chancellors but I couldnt comment on the price of it), and have been upgraded over the last 10 years a few times.
Again I would advise him to visit them both and check them out but I loved my time at Strathclyde, still play the occasional game of rugby for them, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Just an aside but I had offers from a number of uni's (glasgow, strathclyde, heriot watt, Edinburgh and St Andrews) and strathclyde just grabbed me. No matter what he does I hope he enjoys it, both the social side and study, it is an amazing experience and one to be savoured as it is finished all too quickly.
PS if he plays sports I'd advise him to join some clubs it is a great social environment and makes you feel part of a very large community and anyone who went there will say TFI is unmissable.0 -
Probably not the most academic way to look at it but he virgin guide to to uni (called something like that) tells you a lot about social aspects, the nightlife, the cost of the nightlife other interesting facts that might help sway your opinion if they were neck and neck on academics quality. Just pop into waterstones and have a read of the two your interested in without buying it.[FONT=georgia, bookman old style, palatino linotype, book antiqua, palatino, trebuchet ms, helvetica, garamond, sans-serif, arial, verdana, avante garde, century gothic, comic sans ms, times, times new roman, serif]A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it

Not much to choose between them, but I would say Strathclyde just has the edge.0

as far as i know strath is one of the best for engineering and science. theres loads of engineering jobs advertised on their careers website. its a great uni, biggest union in scotland (maybe britain?, 99p drinks on tfi nights too) really good sports union, in city centre and loads of good, cheap and safe outlying areas that are close enough to walk to uni to move to in second year. buses and underground are really handy too. with the 1st year accommodation there, go for birkbeck, its the cheapest and most basic but also the most fun! i loved it in there and you get a cleaner too.
city wise, there are much better clubs and gig venues in glasgow, been to quite a few in edinburgh and i prefer the glasgow ones, especially for gigs. also prefer the shopping in glasgow.
the union website is https://www.strathstudents.com and theres a link on there to the sports union.
i applied for heriot watt too and although i liked it when i visited im really glad i didnt go there now. its too far out of the city, 20-30 mins by bus i think, and edinburgh is much more expensive to live in.0
