The quickest way for a parent to get a child's attention is to sit down and look comfortable.

Just make sure that your phone is unlocked and buy local PAYG sim-card as soon as you get to France ...0

calls cost £1 a minute to send or receive so use text. Probably 10p but maybe 20p a text. A couple of years ago I texted t'wife from the top of a mountain in Austria to where she was having a holiday in South Africa. 22p a go. Use those thumbs!Beep Beep0

The person calling your number will only be charged the usual cost of a call to your mobile no matter where you are or if the call goes to the voicemail.
Depending on how the divert to voicemail was set up, you the mobile phone owner will pay to receive calls that go to voicemail, and you will be double billed.
If a call is diverted to voicemail whilst roaming, you will be charged for an incoming call to the country you are roaming in and then to a call back to the UK voicemail system.
If you want to receive calls whilst abroad, it is always wise to ensure voicemail is definitely switched off. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
if you are on payg, then £1/minute may be realistic, but otherwise if you intend to use the UK SIM sign up for the international option with vodafone, O2 or T-mobile. Calls then cost 60 to 70p/min, and incoming calls 20 to 30p/min for France
but a local sim would be better for calling French numbers; it depends whether you will make only a couple of calls prior to arrival, or more use after that...0
