the boot sector and MBR are often the first to wear out. This is probably not the case, but no guarantees. I assume there is no data on the drives.

The cable and cards (if any) are all seated nicely? You did completely wipe the drive beforehand - no partitions lurking? Your HDD is the first master drive?

First you need to make sure that your drive works, the obvious test is to install DOS or any operating system you know works and you know how to use. This will give you confidence that you drive is working. Boot a few times. This is not foolproof due to sector sizing..

The next is a drive checker. These are usually found on your hdd manufacturer site.

This is one of the requirements "A supported disk controller with data drives attached." but doe snot say what actually is supported?
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

it sounds like either it is not the first partition or the partition is not set as bootable system one, or your system might just be even trying to boot of CD drive as it sees that as your first drive.

If there is non of your data on the disk that you wish to keep, on The Ultimate Boot CD there is Active@ KillDisk Free Edition run this (you probably will only need to do the first 2% of your disk in this case) for it to see the disk us wiped and have another go from the beginning

Just a thought - have you checked the drive jumpers again carefully?

Some older Seagate drives have an odd arrangement where if the jumper is put in the "spare jumper" position, it will act as a "single drive" and won't like another HDD on the same cable.

Some Ide manufacturers will not work with other manufacturers conor drives always seemed to play up with other brands. Make sure you only have one drive. seen it a few times where drive works but if you put a cd drive on the 2nd ide port (no, i do not mean the same cable) then it stops them both from working.

Try typing "fdisk /mbr" might have to be "fdisk c: /mbr"

The ultimate boot disk has a shed loads of disk diags on it

This drive is not under warranty is it?

Let me get this right, it is a 500GB drive but the PC sees it as a 137GB..... Two words - BIOS UPGRADE.
