any tips in getting search engine priority?

My Son in Law has built a website to rent a Golf apartment in Spain.

Good as it looks,he realises that it will not become a selling tool, if, when he

launches it, it is on page 3,427,007!

Short of paying Giggle a fee each month, can anyone give any tips (sneaky or otherwise) to get it up the pecking order.

The most important factor, i believe, is the number of sites linking to yours.

He wants to look into "search engine optimisation" or SEO. He could enlist the services of a SEO expert.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • A lot depends on the tags, these are hidden from normal viewers but are in the making of the page, you need a description of the site, another with keywords, not all search engines bother with these but some do, so put them in, other engines read the text on the index (1st) page, you need to bung in lots of keywords in this text, it may not read very well to you and me, but were talking computer bots here, my site is number 2 on page 1 of google if you search adult humour, but is about page 40 or more on yahoo, they use different ways list sites, it's as much luck as judgement.
It's free to submit sites to yahoo & google but it could take weeks to be trawled.

  • P.S. I may have a high page rank but that does not guarantee large amounts of people looking, I only get about 550 uniques per week, 13000 page views, 70000 hits, I'm happy with that, but it's hardly groundbreaking.

My site always comes at the top of a google.co.uk and a google.com search, I'm very lucky I guess, but like sleep2much's, it's doesn't get millions of page impressions, visits in the thousands. However I've had it for 12 years, which I think helps, and also it gets updated at least once a month - this is important in my opinion.

I don't have any sponsored links, or any people linking back to me.

However I've set-up new sites for companies, that have failed to reach any decent pages on the listings, it's very hit and miss, unless you want to spend a fortune.

My tips, make sure you have a good set of Meta Tags (for the search engines), very specific to what you do, not vague cover-all things. Also pay for Google-adwords if you want a cost effective tool.

Although meta tags should be there, a good title is much more important, H1 for the heading on the pages and a good density of relevant key words in the text. For a niche site it is not impossible to get well listed by sorting out a few basic things. And as isofa says the longer the site is there the better its listing is likely to be.

Can you post the url of the site? It would be much easier to comment if we could see what you have there.
  • Yes, link to it, I can run a quick check through my IBS software, it checks your tags, rank, content, search engine submitter, all kinds of stuff people charge for, if you don't want it shown on this page PM it.

thought about setting up a facebook, myspace group etc as a sort of marketing?
  • I've found that these search engines can pick up user names in forums almost as quick as they are posted, that's one reason there is so much spamming in forums.
