I am in the process of disputing 04/05 and 05/06 in total around £3,000. I have filled in a dispute form but all they have done is send me duplicate letters of what I owe. I have rung them on numerous occasions.
I am at the end of my tether - no way can I afford to pay this money back. I don't know why they awarded alla this money to me in the first place.
I always told them of my circumstances but it made no difference.

My working tax credits and child tax credits were stopped suddenly in September last year, after I was told I had been overpaid by over 2000 pounds for 2004/2005. I received notification that the amount of credits I had received for the previous year was correct. The only difference in my circumstances between the 2 years was that i stopped claiming for one of my children. My payments changed as a result, so I assumed it had been worked out correctly. I also received a notice to say that I was not entitled to any of the child tax credits I had received between April 2005 and September 2005 and that I had to pay back what I had received. How can this be right? I still have a child in full time education at college. I now have a bill saying I owe them nearly 5000 pounds. My annual salary is only 8000 pounds. How on earth do they expect me to pay it back? I have had no joy from the helplines. I have appealed but have heard nothing since October 2005. I am a single mum, having to pay a mortgage and bills with no help from anyone. I have managed to stay afloat by the skin of my teeth so far, but when it gets to the stage when you have to choose whether to pay the mortgage or buy food to eat things are beyond a joke. The Inland revenue have a lot to answer for !!0

If the child was in advanced education, then they are not eligible for ctc.
What course where they doing ?I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
"A" levels at 6th form college.0

From what I can determine, A levels dont come under advanced education for tax credit purposes, so it shouldn't be that.

I was overpaid by a total of around £3000 over two years and, despite the fact that I wrote to them several times to tell them of the overpayment, they wrote and told me that they had checked and I was being the correct amount! In the end it transpired that some lunatic their end had entered my annual childcare cost of £1432 as a weekly cost!!! Anyway I have nearly ended up going completely off my rocker because of their intransigence and complete ineptitude, but I have now agreed with them that I will not get any payments from them until it is all paid back. The irony is that now I am only entitled to the very basic child tax credit of £400 odd quid a year so it will take ages to pay back but they can f**k off for any more money from me!!Jane

Was their a break of some sort where he worked between leaving school and starting the 6th form ?, otherwise I cant see why they have said he wasn't eligible for CTC.
