You should have a product key, yes. You can download one from any of the tons of p2p sites. Assuming you have a legit product key, from actually owning a legit copy of XP, there's nothing illegal about that. Just make sure you get the right version (pro, home, sp1, sp2 etc).
I believe you can also contact microsoft and get a replacement disc.

with XP costing less than £60, there's little reason not to own a legit copy of it. Especially since it's actually worth it!0

It is in the OP's case (unless she can clarify).
The OP has said she does not have an XP CD, and if she was to get hold of one, that she would need a serial number.0 -

And having the COA doesnt wash.
I suggested it before she said she didn't have the product key...Me wrote:Assuming you have a legit product key, from actually owning a legit copy of XP, there's nothing illegal about that. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
There's no grey area, only in Martin's eyes here. Filesharing isn't illegal. It's not even nearly illegal. A lot of the content is, but that's like saying car boot sales are a grey area because you might find pirated stuff for sale there.
I understand what you're saying, and I accept that it's in the sticky. If someone wants to delete the posts then fine, but I don't feel that I suggested anything dodgy. I think the sticky you've quoted is misinformed.
If I were to link to steal this film or Consolevania would those be considered a grey area, solely because they're distributed via filesharing networks?
P2P isn't illegal, nor is it "the enemy" of those who respect copyright laws. Filesharing isn't a legal grey area in any way.
