Does Unlocking Invalidate Guarantee?

If I were to purchase a new phone and have it unlocked, would the unlocking invalidate the guarantee?

(I'm pretty certain it would, but would be grateful if someone could confirm).

Thanks

Unlocking your phone does not invalidate the guarantee (assuming you do it the correct way through the network rather than at a market stall etc).

However, be aware that networks cannot guarantee that their settings will work in unlocked phones from other networks (ie picture messaging settings etc). Also, if you download any unapproved software etc on to the phone, this would invalidate the warranty.
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.

Thanks, I'm looking at unlocking an O2 phone and can't see anything on their website about unlocking, do you know if it can be done legitimately?

Yes, I had an Orange phone unlocked once and was then never able to access the internet on it - and came to the conclusion it may have been related to the unlocking. Consequently I'm trying to deter Mrs Stompa from going down this route!

If the unlock is done using a bonafide unlock code then it does not invalidate your warranty. This involves using a pucca subsidy code like those Virgin give you if you have £30 in topups on your account or the ones that you can buy for Motorola and mobiles locked to Vodafone.

Thanks, but can you get bonafide unlock codes from O2? As I said, I can't see any mention of this on their website.

You'll have to phone O2 to request it from them.

Thanks. Does anybody know how much they would charge for that?

It's £15 for a non Blackberry handset and £10 for Blackberry... I *think*. But it can take up to 28 days for the code and can only be done once your OUT of contract, by which time your warranty/guarantee will probably be over anyway...?

Thanks, but I was talking about a PAYG phone. The intention being to buy a new O2 PAYG and immediately unlocking it.

    According to this though:

    http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/srvs/cgi-bin/webcgi.exe?New,KB=Companion,question=ref(user):str(Mobile),CASE=14790

"For O2 mobiles, we can provide the unlatching code at a charge as long as your mobile has been active on our network for 12 months."

so it sounds as though that idea is a non-starter.
