cheapest pay as you go tarriff?

I am trying to find the cheapest pay as you go tarriff. Currently with Orange but my text saver has run out. All the networks seam to be pushing us into a fixed amount each month which goes against the whole idea of contract free. E.g Orange- top up by 15 pounds a month get 3000 free text messages to be used only at evenings and wends or Virgin top up by 10 pounds each month get 400 texts= 3p per text but leaves you with 0 credit. Either way they require a top up each month, which says to me that these companies are making it harder for us to resist signing up to a contract (you get a better service and more value for money)

What I need is to be able to top up when I can due to lack of funds but find a good text message deal. I just can not afford 10 or 15 pounds each month, if I could I would already be on a contract! Orange Text Saver was ideal. It cost a one off fee of 20 pounds and you received 5 text messages per day for a whole year. Orange no longer do this. Can any one help? Thanks

Hi fundi, The O2 sim card that I have means that you have to top up a certain amount in order to qualify for the free texts (300 a month) but you dont use the credit up along the way, if you dont top up then you dont get the free txts and you only get the amount you top up with (i.e. £5 etc) but can still use the card if you know what I mean, even when I top up £15 a month I get 150 free weekend and evening minutes and its only when they are gone that I use up my credit. the difference with a contract is that you pay the money out and are basically paying for the phone that they have given you and perhaps a cheaper package... its all swings and roundabouts but it if was you and you dont make a lot of calls i'd watch out for one of the free o2/orange/vodafone cards and not worry about the bolt-on packages and just use them as you need to???

On the other hand you could say that the mobile companies were actually helping out a lot of people by enabling them to get the benefits of a contract (in the bundled cheaper minutes/texts) without having to pass a credit check or commit to a contract with a minimum term. Swings and roundabouts really.

What about a fresh sim from CPW, 5p a text and 15p a min to all networks?(I think easymobile may be the same rates actually aswell)
