  • I've used them a few times now, I've always got my deposit back (except the time I decided to spend £50 on shampoo and conditioner for some reason! :))

I went to New ID in Manchester today with my sister - our stepdad had booked the makeovers as a Christmas present. We had a good day overall - the staff were pleasant and friendly, and we were only waiting for a few minutes at the longest between hair, makeup and photos.

We resisted the offer to buy makeup (I wasn't about to shell out money for a makeup brand I'd never heard of before) and I managed to haggle too - we got seven photos on a CD for £50 (down from £200  ) Considering I also got a good cut and blow-dry for that, I'm quite pleased with that overall!

I definitely felt that the woman we were dealing with in the viewing room went for the hard-sell though - "ooh, this photo looks gorgeous" etc, and she was talking about 12-month payment plans at about £20 a month - you definitely have to be prepared to haggle and not accept the first offer unless you want to get ripped off.

Oh also - we didn't have to pay a deposit for ours - not sure if that's because it was bought as a present or not.
