Campaign against fuel prices rise

Ok
I will pass on the mud huts comment. like I ignored the uproar that Mr Chirac's comment created last week. picking on me with stereotypes is very cliche and if you cannot attack me on something else... suit you
I must admit that I am just fed up that we are being slowly squeezed like lemons by ANY government. it is just that this govt is not really specilaised int he subtlety.
Answering the thing about people buying a Merc and complaining that they have not much left: well I totally agree that having more income does not force you to spend it all. Likewise if you have only 2 kids, moving from a 3 bedroom to a gigantic mansion is not necessary.
It is still a country based on free-will or is it human condition to act like boasting sheeps (I earn shed lots of money but I am not comfortable with myself so I need to show it off by buying a useless 4x4 to take the kids to school).
If it is true that the price rise in petrol is due to the cartel, well it is the law of demand and offer. Cant do much about it. But think for one sec, the technology to run on electricity is here. Not going v fast, yes. But why cant we be offered affordable hybrid cars? because the lobbying of the automobile industry.
Sorry but I always tend to see politicians as corrupted mingers. A country should be run by people not bureaucrats."Don't cry, Don't Raise your Eye

"But why can't we be offered affordable hybrid cars?" was the question.
The Toyota Prius is a hybrid car, from £17,500 on the road. I don't know if this is affordable or not, it depends on your budget of course.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that hybrid cars are exempt from paying the London Congestion charge........once they've been registered on their database.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. I am trying to wotk out the most economical fuel to buy. I do mainly motorway driving for my job and buy my own fuel for which I receive a milage repayment from my employer. So the overall cost per mile of fuel is important to me. I know I can help myself with fuel saving driving techniques and I do but I am not perfect.
However, I am looking at the pumps trying to decide between the 'Normal' unleaded and the 'Super unleaded' grades. I have done my own testing and seem to get a couple more MPG with the better fuel, but the difference is not startling enough to help me come to a decision as the most economical option.
Is there any information available apart from the Petrol companies advertising.
I have seached MSE for advice but could not find it. If it is here then I hope somebody will direct me.

I'm in the lucky position of living on the Northern Ireland/Southern Ireland border where fuel prices are 10-15p per litre cheaper in Southern Ireland than in than in Northern Ireland. For the sake of a 5-6 mile round journey, and depending on the size of your fuel tank, you could save about £3-£10 by refuelling in Southern Ireland. Because of that, I'm surprised petrol stations remain existant in my city!
However I recently got 500L of home heating oil for just under £160, whereas 2 years ago, £190 would have filled a 1100L tank - scandalous!
Thank you Mr Blair and Mr Bush0 -
Faith wrote:Mud huts??That is not nice! I live in the North East of England. Every week I buy the local newspaper and look at the selection of jobs on offer. Many of them offer salaries under 20K. Many under 15K. You should think yourself lucky to earn 27K.
The difference between high earners and low earners is choice. Nobody forces you to buy a big Merc if you can afford it. You make that choice. Don't come crying if it costs money. You could have chosen an old banger.
A person on minimum wage doesn't have that choice! Petrol prices affect us in many other ways than just filling up our cars, and we don't have a choice as we all need food, clothing, etc.
In the North East we don't live in mud huts either! And the OP, I think she lives in the South of England.
i'm not sure which part of my post you struggled to understand.
I earn 27k, live in a shared ownership house and paid 3k for a second hand Golf.
My point was that people live within their means, if they can afford a bigger car due to the wage they earn then they buy it, the same with houses. If you earn 100k and live in a 250k house and drive a 50k car then you're probably in the same position financially at the end of each month as somebody who earns 15k and lives in a flat and drives a 15 year old Metro.0 -
The only way I can protest against them greedy company's, Is buying shares and make a profit out of them:p0

The only way I can protest against them greedy company's
Once again the Oil companies are coming under fire for greed because they have once again put up the cost of oil (Worldwide) by a few pence to the consumer, but before you levy the blame, consider the following statement:-
For every £50 you put in your tank, you're giving the government £37 in tax
Now out of that £50, the Government gets £37 and the fuel company / Distributor / POS Retailer (Garage) all share the remaining £13. Now who is greedy??
Garages throughout the UK have started to charge over 90 pence for diesel with the highest reported price of 98 pence the reality of the £1 a litre is here again, the rise is being blamed on the currently high price of crude oil, but regardless of the current price of Crude the lagest part of that which we pay is TAX.
Like I say, it's pointless doing anything about it, because nobody with any authority listens, but I did feel I needed to state which portion of the fuel is tax and which is profit to the companies.0 -

The problem is that is we don't pay tax on fuel something else would go up. I agree it sounds unfair but no government will ever decrease taxation on fuel because it would simply be madness.
I also think its unfair that the aviation fuel is not taxed, why should they be treated differently? They consume vast amounts of fuel and pollute disproportionally to damaging the environment. I don't believe cheap flights are right, we should pay according to how we pollute.

Yes, I agree with that. People live within their means... to a point.
If 2 people go and buy 10 litres of petrol at the pump, one earns 30K and the other 100K, the value of this petrol is different to each of them, the impact on their financial situation is different. You don't have to buy a 250K house just because you can afford it, but if you drive 30 miles to work every morning like I do, whether you earn 30K or 100K, you still pay the same amount of tax! You have no choice!0
