yep you can use them as long as they are valid in the UK they are valid in the US.
usrentcar.co.uk and fifteen02.com have free upgrades with budget/ Avis at the moment0 -
That's interesting, I'd assumed that they weren't valid so was going to change mine to a new one. I'll probably change it anyway - my paper one is held together with sellotape and luck.0

Hmmm.....now I doubt myself because I was under the impression that it had to be a photo one since last year. I went in August and changed mine to a photo one. But dont take my word for it0

We managed to use a paper one in 2006 and the chap at the desk also took a copy of our passports as photo id.
If the rules have changed that would be good to know.

Its the other way round I have seen people refused a car because they had the new photo one and did not bring the old paper one.0

if you have the new photo one you also need the paper, our in laws used the old style paper ones last year with no issues0

It's possible that some car hire companies have started requiring photo licences - but I'm not actually aware of any. They will want to see your passport anyway, which should be enough ID.
US law (or rather each individual state's law) that they (the old paper licences) are valid hasn't changed.0 -
I'd suggest getting it changed over to the photocard style. There's no charge for doing it, and it will be what they're more used to in the States so less likely to cause a problem. The old style certainly is valid, but the kid on the desk might not know that.0

It isn't free to change to a photocard - it costs £10 but only takes a day or two and if you have a digital passport you don't have to send anything other than the form, your old licence, and a photo.0
