Internet Access Problem

Hi all, Can anyone help?
I'm not sure if its a surge problem, but ever since the thunder storms (maybe coincedence) I can not log on to the internet when ever the the power pack of my laptop is plugged in to the mains, or get a dial tone on the telephone (both internet and telephone come off same extension).
The dial up works fine on the battery of the lap top, but that doesnt last long enough!!
