What is the deposit used for?

It`s taken when your credit score is not strong,

It`s only normally held for 6 months, And is credited back into your mobile account and not your bank account so make sure if you want it returned, To call after 6 months and ask them to refund it directly into your nominated bank account

I thought it would be something like that, but not entirely sure. Why do they need it then? Is it incase I take the phone and run so to speak?

It`s just to offset the risks of taking on customers they would`nt normally accept i suppose,

It`s not a major problem as long as there are no hitches getting it returned,
As long as payments are upto date the refund should`nt be a problem

It is for the length of the contract. So I must not forget about that!!!
