Hi

I am about to be thrust into the world of trying to find my 17 year old son car insurance! whats the best way to go about it, buy a car and insure just him, or insure me with him as the named driver, also can I use my no claims on both insurances, does anyone know a good firm for young male driver insurance ! I will be buying him a small engine starter car and he will do pass plus, any help advice or pitfalls to avoid would be welcome.
Cheers

You absolutely shouldn't insure a car in your name and him as a named driver if he is going to be the named driver of the car. That's 'fronting' and is illegal.

You wouldn't be able to use your NCB on your son's car.

Do a search on this forum as this question is asked at least once a day.

If you insure the car with him as a named driver, when in reality he is the main driver, the insurance company will refuse any claim. They are wise to this (fronting) and it is illegal.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • Make him get the bus or pay for it all himself.
  • Well he has been getting the bus!, he has offered to help pay, as hes a college dont think he can afford all himself but thank you so much for the suggestion

If you can swing it so that you are the primary driver and he just used the car sometimes (to avoid fraud, as above) - the best bet is probably Direct Line - they offer no claims discount to named drivers. So stick him on your insurance for a year, then when he comes to take his own out, he should get a bit of a discount...

Also, when I was a young male, I found that an Irish firm (Quinn Direct?) were the cheapest for straight-up insurance.

that ncb probably won't be accepted by anyone else though, so he'd have to stay with DL

If you do get insurance for him in his own name (which you should) then it will cost a lot BUT he will start to build No Claims Bonus (hopefully) that will ease things a lot as years go by.

I know it's cheaper for girls but we did this for my daughter. So by age 22 she was paying only about £350 fully comp on a Ford Cougar V6 Auto.
    Can I help?

i had this with my nephew last week cheapest insurance in the end was direct line £1800 ,but a least the installments are interest free, this was for a 306 diesel but had roughly the same quotes for a clio, accent and a matiz,we must have rung over 50 companies plus used all of martins tips, but the simple fact is if you are a young lad you are going to pay through the nose for insurance, good luck trying
