that ncb probably won't be accepted by anyone else though, so he'd have to stay with DL

yeah, but direct line are normally *quite* competitive as it is.

so chances are that direct line minus no claims will end up about the cheapest you can get...

Best approach to insurance at this age is to shop around with all of Martin's site's. In my experience it is also worth trying some sites diirect, including ecarinsurance.co.uk

Also keep changing the car, to make it more affordable he'll have to put up with a "crap" car, but that's better than the bus I'm sure. All the usual cars, Corsa, Fiesta, Saxo etc will all be likely to cost a bomb for him. When I was searching for insurance on ecar, interestingly a Renault Megane (old version) turned out rather cheap, about £550 (I think this was about the cheapest quote I got for any car, including 1 litre things), but the predecessor (think it's Renault 21), which I'd have thought was much the same car, turned up at £850. So if you search for a range of different cars (most sites let you amend the quote to change the car) you can build up a list of "good" cars based on insurance cost. You might want to work through autotrader.co.uk or ebay to look for possible cars and go through them. Also, remember to try both TPFT and TPO (if ecar turns out one of the cheapest for the details you give, the site quotes for both if you select TPFT anyway.) I found in some cases TPFT can be cheaper than TPO.

If this is just going to be a first car for say one year I'd suggest spending £500 or less on the car. Plenty of good cars out there in this price range. After (hopefully) one or two years of no claims the insurance cost will come down.

If pass plus is going to be done, get it done now before getting a car and getting insurance. It takes barely any time and if the saving is worth the cost of pass plus it's worth getting it done now.
  • Have you tried Adrien flux? They are the cheapest for us both 22 driving a 1.6 and its under £500 a year, my brother in law whos 19 and just passed is paying £894 on a 1.2 which is the cheapest by far, i would check them out :T
