Recycling??? ITS NOT OUR FAULT!!!

I have often said that there far too much packaging in goods. I accept there has to be some, but often its ridiculous. I am all for recycling but consumers must demand companies act responsible because otherwise they wont unless the will is there.
I agree plastic bottles is often unessacary, why can't companies still use the old fashioned way of glass, as least its recyclable. When I was a kid I made my pocket money from collecting pop bottles and taken them back for six pence in the 70's.

lush_walrus wrote:I can see your point and agree that manufacturing companies should take some responsibility for wastage. But unfortunately, even with the best will in the world the majority of things we buy and use are not produced in the UK, so how can we impliment it?
We stop buying it. We stop buying packaged food for two reasons, firstly, your local market, greengrocer, farm shop doesn't wrap, so you can avoid the wrapping if you want to. Secondly, the supermarkets don't buy from English growers, so boycotting them (for fruit, veg, meat & fish) shows your support for local English (or Scottish, or Welsh, or Irish, or British) growers who have been shafted by the Supermarkets. Supermarkets stock the equivalent of sweat shop food. Inferior quality produced overseas for which they pay a pittance and we, by comparison, pay a small fortune.
If we don't buy it, the Supermarkets won't stock it.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Well, first day of the Shepway scheme "make sure the bag and box are out for 7.30am"
Never came to collect! Honestly, our local council couldnt organise a P*** up in a brewery!0 -
The reason for things like plastic bottle not being recycled is the cost. It cost more to collect and sort then what they get in money back for them.
So say you get a £100 a tonne but it costs £200 a tonne to sort. What do you do when as a council you have to offer value for money via the council tax.
Also do you really think that all that you put out goes to be recycled. I have read cases in the US where they collect it as if they are recycling then dump it in landfill. I am sure the same happens in this country to.
I agree that the producers of packaging should not be allowed to make packaging unless they can recycle it and the facilities are put in place before it goes on the market. But we have to put the pressure on not buy it in the first place.
I must admit if I do buy loose fruit and veg I put it in bags but that is because you never know what has been put in to the baskets or trolleys like kids with god knows what on there shoes. Even though in my local Tescos asks you for health and safety issues not to allow children in them.
Anyway I do not put bananas in a bag as they have a casing that is not eaten. And they don't wash the conveyor belts in a supermarket so anything could have been spilt on them. Blood from meat, bleach etc.
When I do my monthly shop I take my own bags. And I need to put an re-useable bag in the car for the just in case when out we pop in to a shop. I try and refuse bags as much as I can. Maybe we should start to charge like they do in Ireland. People would use less. As I know in my local Kwik save charge a penny. I will not pay for a bag.

You might not be a hippy but that comment was only a few notches off.
I know!
Peace man!
I'm not blaming anyone, and I can be just as bad as anybody. I'm just trying to provoke a bit of thought around the subject.
It's nothing to do with 'millionaire lifestyles'
The fact that the phones and DVD cost £35 is more an illustration of the problem. It practically makes them disposable too.
Just like bargin air travel. Ignore the financial cost. What is the enviromental cost? And should the price we pay for such things more reflect that
As I said, I don't live in a mud hut, I buy stuff as well, some of it frivolous but the thought 'Do I need this?' and 'How long will it last me?' do often figure in the process. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.

Shepway finally came yesterday morning - and emptied everything into the normal lorry.
Are they likely to sort it once it gets back to their depot?0 -

I completely agree with you, Im just a bit less optimistic about people managing to do this to recycling what they use.
I personally buy all fruit and veg directly from our local organic farm, but it really is much more expensive than supermarket wrapped and processed alternatives. For that reason, I can't see it happening.
I do try very hard to live as environmentally friendly as possible, but it really does take a lot more effort than recycling what you have consummed.
I hope that people do follow your lead. x0 -

Apparently.......The material collected will be sorted at the kerbside by crews using specially designed vehicles. It will then be taken to the council’s Ross Depot in Folkestone where it will bulked and baled and sold onto reprocessors.
