You'll probably only save £10-20 by buying a decent Fiat Stilo timing belt kit yourself. Visit myfavouritegarage (website)and they show you all your local garages and their hourly rate, they boast an average of £45 p/hour. The job takes 2.5 hours max (don't be fobbed off by cowboy mechanics). If you are going by your own kit then I would highly recommend a gates timing belt kit, you can pick these up off ebay for around £80 a set (inc. P&P).

There are a lot of people saying when belts should be replaced, the FACTS are for a 1.6 Fiat Stilo: Every 5 years or at 72,000 mile intervals (whichever is first). As for comments regarding the water pump, ask you garage to check the condition during the belt replacement, or as they're only about £25 quid each (again dozens of new ones available on ebay), you could ask your mechanic to chuck one in, for an extra 1/2 hour of labour: All in all it shouldn't cost you too much:

Timing belt: £80
Labour (3 hrs@£50) £150
Water pump (optional) £25

TOTAL COST: £255

All materials will include VAT (add £30 to labour rate...)
