Fiat Stilo - Timing Belt replacement ?

What mileage has your car covered? You should be able to look up in your Stilo book (or online) what fiat's recommended cam belt change is for this car.
I'd personally follow the miles rather than age, unless the car was about 10 years old.
The garage is right that, that a failure would most likely cause bent valve stems which would be costly to fix.
dont do this, its a big gamble to take, its not just about the amount of miles the car has done, remember the belt has been under severe tension for 5 - 6 years now i would be changing it regardless of miles....work permit granted!0 -
Just to make clear, Fiat main dealer are quoting around £300 for the belt change, another £150-200 for service and MOT. Is this too much for either/both ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. yes it is too much.but you wont get them to move on thier prices.
you will need to find somewhere else to do the work....work permit granted!0 -
Try ringing Fiat dealer parts dept and ask how much for a cam belt kit - they vary and you can get pattern parts. Ask how long to do the job - Fiat hourly rate could be too high. If you find an independent garage to do it, you could supply parts yourself - if they don't mind...
Re service cost, depends what service it is. MOT's vary in price - VOSA recommend a cost in the £50s but most are less.Genie

Thanks all.
I've found an independent that will service for £82.50 + oil etc, cam belt change for £165 (3 hours labour) + parts, and will do the MOT test for free as I'm having the cam belt done. So around £300 in total I guess.
Reasonable ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Seem to be 50+ vat for kit here: http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/timing_belt_kits_detail.cfm
I need to get mine done too 2002 1.2 60k, may ask a mobile mechanic to quote as the hourly rates are more reasonable
Am wondering what to do about my Oct 2001 multipla 1.6, it is obviously due by age but only has 44k miles and is likely to cost 250 quid but I suspect it is still worth it?I think....0 -

I have three fiats in the family. Serviced by me. I am not a mechanic just an enthusiast. Fiat recomend 72000 miles or 5 years for the cambelt. I did my wifes panda and sons punto. I got a mobile mechanic for my stilo jtd as i had not done a diesel before. Having watched it was only easier for him because of better tools including an ingenius homemade one. He charged £50.. Cars are not rocket science, sevicing is cheap and easy to do yourself espesially a Fiat. If you don't have the time or inclination to do it yourself please avoid main dealers unless under warranty. Some parts have to be from a main dealer but most can be found at a good motor factors. Find a good mechanic, only reason i choose a mobile is so i can watch. As for fix it again tomorrow this applies to any car that is not looked after. Some are better than others but cars with service history are sometimes better than cars with low milage that have been neglected.0
