Double glazing

Could anyone who has had double glazing installed give their opinion of how good a job they had done,if there was any problems and if so how were these resolved.I live in the North of Scotland where the weather is very severe, the windows and doors I am wanting to replace face west and are exposed to regular gales so I want a thorough job doing. For 6 windows and two doors I have been quoted £8,144 from Everest.which seems a bit excessive. Can anyone throw a light on this problem as there seems to be a lot of horror stories out there.Have you had a good or bad experience with your double glazing?

  • HI annie.i'm also pricing windows and doors at present. I'm in N.Ireland and hope they are a lot cheaper than that here. I'm looking for 9 windows and 2 doors and I'll let you know if anyone ever gets back to me(have had 3 different companies out last wk and no word back yet.

Did you see the thread yesterday about Everest windows (i think)and everyone thought they were expensive at first quote and then dropped the prices when they give you discounts to encourage you to buy.

  • I am looking for a good job at a reasonable price. When the rep first started talking prices he said it would be£16,757 but with various discounts he brought it down to £8144. This is a nonsense, the first prices reductions are obviously the "bait on the hook",designed to draw you in.I was impressed by the quality of the windows and the length of guarantee but eight items at over £!000 each is a bit pricey.I wondered if there are any firms out there who could do same (or better) quality at a better price. Also I have no evidence that Everest are as good as they claim.
  • crikey o riley £8000 plus . You'd be better off walking onto a local upvc manufacturer and catching one of the lads who make the windows. They could fit them alot cheaper. I'd could drive up to Scotland, measure up, drive up again fit the windows and doors and stop in a posh hotel for about £5000. Everest, Safestyle, etc etc all the same. Shocking prices and some (not all) shocking installers
  • Ive still no word back on any prices but theres no way i would be doing any work on my house with those quotes. It would have been interesting to get a breakdown of how they came to that 16k price..u should have told him you just wanted to buy some windows and not the company!!!:D :rotfl:

  • HI I did have double glazing fitted last year, I had a few quotes off different companies at this time last year when they are all having their sales due to the fitters not having much work. There was quite a considerable difference in the quotes, I was quoted £10 - £11 grand from a couple I think about £8 from another and the one I ended up going with was just over £5 grand. I was really looking forward to the difference it was going to make, I was finally going to be have a nice warm flat but it hasn't turned out like that. I have had to call the company and have someone come out every month- 2 months due to finding faults and them not being sorted properly. I was told by one engineer that a previous engineer hadn't done anything when he came out, I ended up having to have an inspection done to find out what work needed doing and why I was still having problems. One of the problems I had was draughts, mainly because they had used the usual rubbery sealant which was coming away, leaving a gap. The inspector also said that some of the windows hadn't been sealed on the outside when they were first fitted, this was not looked into by any of the engineers on their visits, one reason being they have so many jobs to get through in a day that they can only do what you tell the call centre about.

So to sum up I have not had a very good experience, I'm just glad I've got a 10yr guarantee as it would take that long to get them right!! That's jut my experience though and I think I was probably just unlucky as everywhere you look now are double glazed windows. I'm in the East by the way.
  • emailed you

We were quoted £3200 for 5 windows (with wood grain effect outside) and 2 doors by a very good and well recommended double glazing company w

My parents just had some new windows fitted by Anglian (http://www.anglianhome.co.uk) they were very happy with the service and they're not easily impressed!
  • Annie ,

I`m in N.E.Scotland and have supplied loads of PVC windows and doors over the last 24 months or so . I buy mine from http://www.sashuk.com/ and can thoroughly recommend them .
They are manufactured using VEKA MATRIX profile with good thick frames and proper `box` reinforcing , not the L shaped reinforcing which I believe is commonly used . All hinges and screws are stainless steel with some super duper high quality `astenitec` finish .Basically they are a well made unit built to withstand the worst Scottish weather can throw at them .
Give them a shout for a quote .
I know they are supply only but I`d guess you wouldn`t pay more than £2000 for them all then you`d easily get a local joiner to pop them in for £600 - £800
    Hope this helps

you could all get decent deals going along the supply only and hire a joiner route . Give it a try , you`ll be pleasantly surprised I`m sure
