Avoid phone insurance, even if you lose your moby.

What happens if you lose your moby? Well, you dig out your old phone and ask your provider for a new SIM card.

Wrong.

Orange will not supply only the SIM card. They charge £70 and give you a new phone anyway.

I refuse to pay mobile phone insurance.

I upgraded my phone at the end of the 12 months, giving me two phones.

So the most efficient approach is to quickly sell the old phone (they fall in value steadily you know), the proceeds of which will pay that £70 (or almost) in the event of loss.

I found that selling my Nokia 6100 on Ebay made £55! I was quite impressed with that...

Lee.

I use Ebay and am surprised at the number of fools on there that overpay for something they can pick up quite cheap at places such as Argos.

Like you I've never had phone insurance. Phone insurance is second only to the insurance you pay on loans and credit card balances. Never had any of them and I'm still here :)

Many household insurances cover the cost of replacing goods accidently damaged/stolen, (though not just "lost" or mislaid) for a few pounds a year. This will include a mobile phone.

I agree mobile phone insurance is expensive. Touch wood I've not lost my phone.

At £5 a month for Orange Care that's not cheap. £60 a year may be half the value of a typical phone.

Does insurance cover the cost of stolen calls? I don't have insurance and I phoned up Orange and they could not put me a limit on my account in the event of theft!! :(

If I had one of those "unlimited" offers, I bet they're quick to enforce their "fair usage" policy.

BTW, Orange charge a £15 "admin fee" for any claim.

Orange Care terms and conditions state:
6.2 Replacement phones may be supplied from refurbished stock that have been tested and are fully functional.
  • Yup I agree I dont pay insurance, had it free for the first 3 months when i bought my fone then cancelled the DD 2 weeks before the end of the 3rd month.

It's too expensive, and the amount u have to pay to claim (in addition to what you have already paid!) is pants!
  • Orange will replace your phone with a possible refurb so it won't always be a new one. Then phone has actually cost you £15 admin fee plus how ever many years of £6 a month so for example if you have had orange care for 2 years that is £144 + £15 admin fee. Look under the t&c's of orange care and it will tell you that your 'new' phone may not be new. Read my other post on cover. I have pb away from the home with a nil excess and it will be replaced with a new phone as i will be sent the cash/chq to go and get it.
