Hi, i went last year to Valencia with my husband and another couple as part of our "40th Birthday" celebrations. We went in August so that we could go to la Tomatina - the mad tomato throwing festival they have every year in a small village about 50 mins away from Valencia. Anyway we stayed in the Holiday Inn which was right next to the Science and Arts place, and also a big shopping centre. At the top tier of the shopping centre was loads of restaurants ie mexican, mcDs, american steak bars, italian etc. which was good as the hotel only served breakfast. the bar only opened at night. there was also a small swimming pool but it seemed to shade over quite early. It was also a wee bit out of the old town section but there was loads of buses going all over. before we went we got a pack from the valencia tourist board with bus timetables, maps of the city, places to visit, details of whats on when etc. The link is in a previous post, just email and ask for a tourist pack.

Thanks for the very constructive response. It's not always the case on here!

Don't suppose you actually went to a game at the stadium? We'll be there when they're at home to Zaragoza (by which time they may have won the Copa del Rey!) so may try to get to see it. (OH permitting!!!)

When we were there it was midweek, but there was a full league programme. Sadly Valencia were away, which meant Levante were at home. But we went anyway. Levante were relegated that season, as were their opponents that night, Numancia.:o The Estadio Ciutat de Valencia is not the finest stadium in Spain, shall we say.

A friend has been to the Mestalla and says the atmosphere is fantastic. You are very close to the pitch even in the upper tiers. Go for it. It should be a decent game, Zaragoza are desperate for points.

I saw the Copa del Rey semi-final 1st leg at Barcelona when Valencia fluked a 1-1 draw in one of the most one sided games I've ever seen. Valencia are not a good team this season, my money is on Getafe for the CdR.

Don't worry too much about hotel location, I would suggest. As long as you are near a metro station you will have no problem getting about - it is an excellent system.

we stayed in valencia in march, and stayed at the hotel Expo
    ideal location for us.
we payed £45 a night for the room for both of us. which included b&b
location was great, mind u we like walking but the metro is right outside and so is the bus station. (you can get the metro from valencia airport to right outside your hotel.)
breakfast, well ive never seen so much choice in all my life, fruit, hot foods, cakes , pastries, biscuits, croissants, low fat diet corner, nuts/seeds, wine, cereals, toast, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, donut type long things diped in chocolate milkshakes , descent coffee, tea, fruit juices etc

we preferred valencia to madrid and barcelona. not soo touristy.
valencia has a beautiful huge long beach. plenty to see and do, its worth buying a guide book before you go.

    were going back this year

We were there for a week last September. Instead of a hotel we rented a spacious apartment for the same price as a good hotel room. It was situated two metro stops from the centre. To get acquainted with the place you can take the open-topped bus ride and take a walking tour round the old part of the city. We also went on a couple of short excursions, one to the lake and one to a Roman city a few miles from Valencia.

You can get to the beach by using the metro (in this case a tram) and it's well worth a stroll along the esplanade. As for the City of Arts and Science , we enjoyed the aquarium but were disappointed by the science museum where most of the "hands-on" exhibits seemed not to be working.

Here is a map of the metro system :-

Line 4 takes you to the beach.

across the road from hotel expo (sadie22) is hotel kris abadia (3 star) i would recomend that hotel, very modern but without a fancy breakfast, just a continental type deal, all exterior rooms as well

another one with a much better location right in the centre of valencia is hotel mediterraneo (3 star), could be pricey though and according to the reviews some room are interior and small, although i have had good rooms when i have stayed there

overall i think valencia hotels are not cheap and a 3 star for 60 euros is good value, the centre of valencia and plenty of hotels are reached direct on the metro from the airport

hotel expo and kris abadia and at least 2 big hotels near the turia park that i cant remember the name of need a metro change , and are a little out of the way

Well, now, Sadie, you sure know a way to a man's heart is through his stomach!!!

And, funnily enough, I'd put the Expo at the top of our list just last night! Your comment on the breakfast says we've made the right choice.

We'll certainly go for the 'donut type long thingies dipped in chocolate' - CHURROS!

A BIG thankyou to all who've contributed to this thread.

MrSmartprice - Getafe have just gone 4 league games without scoring (including against Zaragoza today!), so you might be on a loser!!!

Trisontana - the touristbus website does not sell tickets. Do you buy them on the bus or at a 'shop'? One website says the buses can get quite crowded?

ps....did anyone get to the Zoo? Was it worth it?

You can buy the tickets for the open-top bus on the bus, or from the kiosk near the main stop in the town centre. When we went in September it wasn't particularly crowded.

Valencia could still be relegated. They have had a spectacular fall from grace this season, mainly due to them having the worst home record in La Liga. Today was their 9th home defeat.

Getafe are having a decent season. They have drawn at Barcelona and won at Real Madrid in the last few weeks. Amazingly, Valencia are 7/5 on Betfair to win, Getafe 9/4 and the draw 9/4. I think it's a couple of quid on Getafe for me.

Even better, I shall be in Spain for the final, but not in Madrid. Our game to attend next week will be either Murcia - Mallorca or Elche - Salamanca. (I doubt i'll get away with both;) )

    Enjoy Valencia!
