  • Well actually it happened to Jeremy Clarkson recently, with no signature.... the thing the press forget to mention is that if it happens, you're covered by the Direct Debit guarantee.

i'm not sure the DD went through though.. i do know someone tried to do it and send funds to a charity but clarkson in the end honoured a donation anyway.

The funds did go out, but he waived his rights under the DD guarantee, and as you say, honoured the donation.

AFAIK, he also chose not to involve the police, who could probably have found out who was behind it. (Bank's hands were 'tied' by data protection law)

  • he chose not to involve the police as he challenged the public to cause him financial harm in his newspaper column, as he believed it was not possible for someone to extract money from his account even with so many details.

unfortunately he gave too many details away, including his home address, full name of account holder as it appears on statement and so on.

for ebay purposes you really shouldnt have to give out more than sort code and account number, some people ask who they should make the payment to, but that field is only for the senders reference which will appear on their statement, and does not make a difference when it comes to the banks directing the payment.

We only need to give out limited details for the purposes of a transfer, but a savvy buyer could obtain your full name and address with very little trouble if they chose to.

I don't think Clarkson gave his address away... but he did drop hints. It wouldn't have been too difficult to guess the account name, tbh. :D

According to a car magazine I was reading Clarkson gave his home address, as well as other info like what school he attended and even what car he drove. Despite all that he was still protected by the DD guarantee.

If the seller is a business which accepts credit cards why not? As long as the card details are phoned rather than emailed there is no problem. The risk is with the seller as card companies can make chargebacks when a customer denies knowledge of the transaction. It's not just Paypal who make chargebacks!

Surely though a buyer can tell the difference between someone who is a business and can possibly accept credit cards over someone who is just a casual seller?

Just thinking about the above....obviously not as they asked the OP if they accept credit cards. Still a numpty methinks :D
