How to recieve payment by Bank Transfer

A buyer has just emailed me to say their having paypal problems.
They asked if they could give me their credit card details instead but I cant take payment from that, as I only sell on Ebay now and then and I am not a shop.
I have cheque and postal orders accepted on the listing, but was wondering how do I take payment by Bank Transfer instead.
What details would I have to give them? I know its been discussed on here before and everyone says it safe but I just don't know how to do it.

just give them the name of the bank, the sort code, and the account number. also the full correct name of the account.
    that should be ok.
when they have emailed you to say they have paid it, check with your bank that its been received.
    Get some gorm.

They don't even need that much info if you are nervous. All they need for an online transfer is sort code and account number..that's what makes them such a bad idea from a buyers point of view, you might not even know whose account you are paying into.

  • Thanks for the replies. I'll reply to the buyer offering it as an option now I know.
  • they asked for credit card number? dont give that out whatever you do!

as soolin states, all you need to give them is sort code and account number, ask them to add the ebay item number as the 'reference' which should then show up on your statement making it easier for you to identify.

if they are with a different bank to yours it could take up to 3 working days for you to receive the payment, dont dispatch until its showing up on your account.

They didn't ask for the OP's cc info, they wanted to give the OP their cc info. What a numpty! :D

If the seller is a business which accepts credit cards why not? As long as the card details are phoned rather than emailed there is no problem. The risk is with the seller as card companies can make chargebacks when a customer denies knowledge of the transaction. It's not just Paypal who make chargebacks!
  • I'm having the same issue, buyer having problems with Paypal, and they want the item urgently, so I thought I'd be helpful and offer a bank transfer. Them having my sort code and account number isn't dangerous then, is it?

I've had my card skimmed in the past, and am now very wary of giving out details about my bank!

  • nope not dangerous at all, there have been scare stories of ppl setting up direct debits and standing orders like this but they would still require a signature to do that, something the press seemed to forget when spreading the stupid scare story

Well actually it happened to Jeremy Clarkson recently, with no signature.... the thing the press forget to mention is that if it happens, you're covered by the Direct Debit guarantee.

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

    Thank you :)
I'll give the buyer the option, she might not even want to do it, I just needed some reassurance that I was covered.

Fay - I was thinking about Clarkson when I typed my post!
Good to know that if anything untoward should happen, I'm covered by the DD guarantee. Thank you.
