Hello
I am lost. I consider myself intelligent but like anything AOL, it just dont work.
I have a grey cable, yellow cable, the free dell laptop, netgear router, and filter,
So i plug in the filter, plus in the phone, plug in the grey lead and connect it to the special port on the back of the netgear box, but then the yellow lead confuses me.
the only place i can plug it in on the laptop is in the small square hole at the rear of the laptop with a picture of a phone. the literature indictates that it should be plugged in where there is an icon of three little monitors. however, they suare plug doesnt sit well in the more rectangle hole.
the upshot is, the port light on netgear isnt lighting and nothing is connecting,
where am i going wrong?
p.s. i have plugged the box into the mains!

shove it in harder, it should click into place, it's an ethernet lead btw, and shouldn't fit in the modem portEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I can't remember the cable colours of netgears now but I vaguely remember that the yellow one is usually an ethernet cable, there should be 4 sockets in the back of the router it fits in to, if not its a cable that goes from the netgear to the filter but you said you have plugged that in (was it the grey one?)0

You've plugged the ethernet cable (yellow) into the dial up modem (phone picture). It needs to be plugged into an ethernet port (you were correct that it's three monitors). They're two different connectors physically which is why it doesn't sit well. You either have an ethernet port or your don't. And you can't connect it to anything else. Are you sure it doesn't have an ethernet port (I suppose it may not if it's the cheapo free laptop)?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The aol routers are the netgear DG834Gs unless they changed them so it will have 4 ethernet ports but I assume you will be using your laptop wireless so you won't need the ethernet cable0

looks a bit like this, but the smaller square end on the ethernet cable doesnt click in there whatsoever.0 -

Assuming laptop has wireless of course (considering doesn't even seem to have ethernet....)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

i am fine with sticking the ethernet in the netgear port, but its just where to stick the other end that actually fits properly and can communicate with the blimming thing also connecting the ethernet is stage 1 of going wireless!0 -
The end of an ethernet cable isn't square, are you sure it isn't a modem cable
ethernet left, modem right

ethernet cable will not fit into a modem port, but modem cable will fit into an ethernet port (badly)Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Phonline socket lead with filter to back of router in the port on its own, then ethernet lead from any of the numbered ports, then the other end of that lead goes into back of laptop port.
from memory
Basically all this is on the install disc that should be inserted first.0
