Not sure on the debt collectors. I would have thought they would have said how long before they start to contact you which gives you a set time to srt this out.

Based on what you have on, there is no way you could use that much elec. So, the readings wrong. However, do RR show people around and switch the heating on to warm the place up? Do you have other appliances on? Some LL's switch their heating on and if it's all elec (no gas supply) it could add to the bill.

It's worth discussing this direct with the Supplier as they have access to reading data you may not be aware of. They may easily spot the error and re-estimate the bill straight away.

  • Did you ever visit this property when it was empty.
  • Yes RR do show people round....but no heaters are left on,,,,,and no heaters are put on prior,or they shouldnt be.(now that cud be another can of worms , if thats the case). Yes i do visit the property when its empty,,,polishing ect,,collecting mail,,or even just checking things are ok,,its in the same vicinity of my work so its not neglected or anything,,i go passed it twice a day
  • There is no need also to "warm the place up" as it never seems to be a "cold type property",It must have excellent insullation?,,,,,indeed my tenant told me tonight both her and her boyfreind pay 30.00 per month direct debit to scottish power and they are in credit as well,,so its very econimical to run,,
  • I was only asking, as when I was working in London a couple of years ago, these properties were made available as short or overnight stays sometimes. The proprietor wasn't made aware of the stays.
  • You would hope that the terms of your contract would be spelt out. However, in your case, because they did read the meter for a number of years would suggest you could rely on it.

However, you have a much more powerful arguement. Simply tell them if they don't settle the disputed bill, you will stop using them as agents and in addition make a claim via the small claims process to recoup the money.

Depending on your relationship with them, they may not be keen to lose the custom?
  • UPDATE........today i contacted RR they said the bill is estimated so how can Scottish power tell the true monies owed.RR did say that they woud have estimated it based on previous bills when someone lived in it,and that they said that 80.00 is about right anyway. I found a bill like i said for 29.00 so i totally disagree......So tomorrow following instructions from scotish power i have to get the meter readings from RR and fone scottish power with the readings, plus Scottish power said , that my new tenant that moved in after the property was empty for a while was also an estimated bill????I feel like paying the bill myself and telling RR to go were the sun dont shine or i dont even know if the problem is with scottish power...I AM LOSING THE PLOT. Incidently my latest tenant told me her monthly bills for her and her partner are 30.00 per month and at that she is in credit,so its obviously less than 30.00 pcm
