Been reading this thread and nodding my head. Can't believe how much things have changed with renting a property.
The LA we are going through now is a one man band, and seems a nice old guy - but he's meticulous and the references might mean we don't get the place we want. Gutted!
We have been three years with current LL and have been ideal tenants, have glowing reference from work (been there 7 years), and the LA says we are 'just the kind of family [he] wants in [his] places'.
Great! But my partner is main earner and so the credit check is in his name - and he has had some dodgy student debt (now resolved - but left a stain) - got no CCJs or anything but lots of gaps in history and stuff.
I have missed lots of payments in past and had stuff go to debt collectors - and I suppose hat will show too.
Shame cos we have settled down and got responsible in last few years - but seems we are going to be scuppered. Guess the idea of a fresh start is extinct in today's England.0
