Someone went into the back of me

  • Basically the bottom of the boot lid has crumpled, and slight damage to the bumper. I can open and close the boot with no problems and the damage is not on the inside of the boot.
She came worse off as the bonnet on her wheelie bin on wheels was a little raised and dented the bumper.
Time of the accident was 10am this morning, i have now put the 3rd party on my insurance but that was taken effect @ 3pm today when i finally got round to phone my insurance company. They asked the tricky question of was i on business or plesure at the time of the crash, i said plesure even though it was business as my company car was in for repair of all days.

A lot of people think they're insured third party to drive the cars of others, but in recent years this benefit/feature of many policies has been dropped and/or needs to be paid for.

If it were me, given the whole raft of dilemma situations that could arise, I'd pay for the MIL's car damage and not put a claim in to the driver who hit the car. It isn't like they'd ever chase it up as no claim had been made.

Oh, I think I overlooked some information that was important. I think I didn't spot it might be a hire car and her car was damaged... so 2 reasons why a claim might be put in.

    Oh well.
  • That was what i was thinking of doing, MIL is saying to contact her to go through the insurance, or see if she pays for it out of the insurance. But i dont want to risk putting myself into the you know what.
The weird thing is, as i was in a rush and she was a little upset that i caught up with her she only gave me her phone number and did not ask for my details, i said i would contact her depending on what MIL said.
Dont know how she hit me as it was on a quite street, probally talk on the mobile b4 it happened.

Little bit confused, over this. What do you mean about the hire car and her car (take it thats the mil)

I presumed both the OP and MIL were females, sorry (not that it makes any difference I guess)

    Good Luck

  • Just been speaking with my dad, and he thinks as she went into the back of me she is in the wrong and its a open and shut case. As long as the car is insured by someone (e.g mil) then there should not be a problem and they will not question about my insurance. I am at a lose on "What happens if someone goes into the back of you, and you are uninsured"
  • My dad has also came up with a suggestion of saying, mil was driving and i was sitting beside her, i done the talking. Not sure if that would work and could put me in trouble.

Don't start telling fibs. It'll end in tears.

The accident was not your fault, as you were hit from behind. Contact the girl who hit you, and offer her the chance to pay for the repairs without going through the insurance. If she's got good no-claims bonus, or any other reason to want to avoid telling the insurance company, she may well go for it. Get a quote and send her the bill.

If she wants to go through insurance, you might be better paying for the repairs to your car yourself, and forgetting about it. Don't even think about paying for hers.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

You made a mistake in thinking you were insured, please don't make another by committing fraud.

Unfortunately, you may just have to accept that you'll need to pay for your own damage. Live and learn, no harm done this time.
