Cancelling an o2 cpw contract when purchasing an iphone

can anyone help please ?
I purchased an iphone prior to Christmas and was under the impression that I could replace my existing cpw o2 contract with a new 18 month contract direct with o2
Cpw have informed me that i cannot cancel as i did not transfer number even tho I provided detail of my existing contract when i registered my iphone and foolishly assumed one contract would replace the other.
