Adding a litre or 2 of petrol to a diesel tank to aid cold starting is a common practice. I don't know how a modern PD diesel would take to this, but this was a V70 Volvo and it was absolutely fine.

    That's who came to me!

Had to wait for 3.5 hours but at least it was dealt with there and then. Other option was being recovered to a garage then having to arrange for the fuel to be drained etc the next day. They could have been with me within an hour. I live 20 miles from work and can't get there easily by public transport so not having my car off the road for a day was a big advantage. The guy said there are not very many AA vehicles around that can do this. Only one in central Scotland. I was his 7th and last customer yesterday.

    Bit of a contradiction there
No contradiction at all. There is no way that an individual can legally transport and then dispose of a quantity of fuel. That's why the AA service carries special equipment and the operator has a licence to transport the fuel away from the site at which it is drained from the car.
  • i have heard in the past that as long as you dont start the engine it doesnt cause harm putting the wrong type of fuel in a car. Then you can arrange for the fuel to be drained off! what do i know im only female lol
:T This site is great! Thanks to Martin Lewis & everyone who participates and helps so many people! Without you all, where would we be ??:T

Wonder where he's from? :rotfl:
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Ouch! That was a bit of an expensive mistake. £200 charge + 1 wasted tank of fuel + 1 new tank of correct fuel. Still beats a new engine though!

This happened to my friend just before Xmas. Her OH decided that as a treat he'd fill up her car on a journey. They got a number of miles up the road before it died.

Recovery man turned up and was being quite patronising to my (female) friend about what had happened ... until her OH piped up and said he had done it.

Total cost was £250+VAT to get it sorted, cost of wasted fuel was about £50. Delay to journey was 5-6 hours.

Unlucky. I guess its a mistake you only ever make once.

You'd think so wouldn't you, unless you met my mate. He's done it three times to company cars and they still employ him!!

Nope - my boss did it twice in about as many months. Luckily (or not) it was a company car......

It happens alot unfortunately - and yes, Sarah it is kinda better if you don't drive vehicle when you know what you've done! Drain it out, change fuel filter and should be okey dokey.

Oh Cheesy Mike - you got rid of my favourite car/vehicle.... I love Land cruisers - armchairs on wheels - Jeremy Clarkson types would love them - environmentalists not. But hey, who cares. Jeremy for PM.:D
