Petrol in a diesel car!

I can't believe I did this!
I was running on empty and went into a different petrol station to fill up. Noticed prices were higher than my local garage so only put £20 in. I then drove 500 yards to the shops and went in shopping.
When I came out my car wasn't keen to start. Checked my fuel reciept and saw I'd put petrol in instead of diesel.
It cost me £175 to get the petrol drained out. Apparently I should also get my fuel filter changed.
Luckily the car seems to be running OK.
Just a warning to everyone that drives a diesel car - CHECK BEFORE YOU FILL UP

I think if you had filled your tank with diesel and then run it through you would have been OK.
On the other hand if you had put diesel in a petrol car that would have been a complete disaster.
I think its that way round0 -
Happened to someone I know. I towed them home and we drained the tank ourselves, then used the petrol/diesel mix at a rate of 1 litre per tankfull over the next few months.0

The AA man said if I'd put in less petrol I could have topped up with diesel and it would probably have been OK. Unfortunately I had put in approx a third of a tank and cos it was pretty empty it went straight to the engine.
My FIL did the same thing last year and I couldn't understand how he could do it!!
Now I know to concentrate when filling up :rolleyes:0 -
Why on earth would you do that?
I once put 10 litres of petrol into the 75 litre tank on my Toyota Landcruiser diesel. I simply filled up to the brim with diesel, shook the car up, then carried on. It ran a bit lumpy but worked fine for another 80,000 miles. In 2 years and 90,000 miles of motoring that was the only car I ever owned that didn't have a single fault or warranty claim. Superb piece of kit. I wish I had kept it. Not really a money saver's car though

An absurd number of people per year do this these days.
Common sense ideas, like fitting all diesel cars with triangular fuel slots and changing the diesel pumps likewise to be triangles, seem to go unheard.0 -

Bit of a contradiction there. There is a way to dispose of it, but its basically going to cost. Appreciate this is a money saving forum and in this instance your Diesel Toyota which lets face it are the most indestructable machine on earth managed to survive on a mix but most cars will suffer in some way shape or form. Petrol wrecks a diesel engine lubrication process, and is particularly damaging to its costly, high-pressure pump, fuel injection system and filters - even in a mix. Theres already enough crud in the petrol we buy without adding to it!CHEAP doesn't mean ETHICAL0
