;D A huge thank you, thank you, thank you to all the contributors on this forum. 
Using info gleaned solely from postings on here, I changed just over a month ago to a combination of BT Option 1, TalkTalk Option 2, 1899 and 18866; all simplified through the use of the excellent Orchid dialler. Additionally I put my 3 most frequently called mobile numbers into my TalkTalk calling circle for weekday calls and wherever possible I have been using Say NO to 0870 .
The net result is that I have reduced my total phone bill (inc. line rental) from £45 pcm to under £14 pcm, without placing any restrictions on the calls that I and my phone hungry teenagers make.
That's a saving of just over 70% a month.
