Pasta - the value/basics range don't hold together as well and look sort of greyish - reminds me of the pasta we used to get in Africa, which was made partly with maize flour, and if you cooked it for a second too long it broke apart.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I agree I love the Warburtons seeded batch loaf and its aroud £1.44 a loaf but as I live alone I usually seperate it into four slices at a time, wrap in foil and freeze those I'm not using. So a loaf last me well over a week that way.I would never downsize wahing up liquid.I opened my last large bottle of Fairy washing up liquid on 1/12/09 ( i decide to see how long a bottle would last me,I only wash up once a day as I'm on my own and see no point in wasting hot water) and have about an inch left in the bottle No doubt to me its worth the extra cash.I only buy Lurpak light butter as well as I perfer its taste,I can't abide the 'yellow' butter I suppose its what you get used to. I can economise on quite a few things but some stuff I use for preference
I totally agree. I have been a fairy snob for years but decided to try tesco own brand. I used nearly a bottle in a week  and found it was definitely inferior - i tried to clean my frying pan 3 times, and ended up getting fairy to clean it properly. What a false economy
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

How do you use so much washing up liquid?! When I moved into my current flat with my OH in Aug 07. my Mum gave me some cleaning things, including 2 small bottles of Fairy liquid... we're about halfway through the first bottle 2.5 years later! Our dishes look clean and we've never been ill with food poisoning, so I don't see the need to use anymore...

My OH always insisted on Heinz baked beans. One day I gave him Asda own, and he never noticed! Been giving him them ever since, he still thinks I buy Heinz LOL!
I won't buy any other cornflakes than Kellogs though, no one else tastes like them.
If you dilute Stardrops with water, you have a great spray that works on anything. They are available in Morrisons, and lately in our local Poundland. With the cleaning products, but usually near the bottom of the shelf. You have to search!

Ah, what I failed to mention in my post is that I don't eat meat any longer. In fact I've not eaten any for over 20 years now BUT if I did eat meat I would never in a million years buy cheap sausages or anything that could contain MRM. Cheap mince I suspect could be OK but I expect it's often quite fatty and this may not be what you want although I do acknowledge that the fat is what gives most meat its flavour and you do have the choice of skimming that off once it's been cooked.

Ethically-produced meat is most probably what I'd be looking at buying even if I had to make do with much less of it but each to their own, I say.
  • I am very particular to Nutri-Grain bars, and I haven't seen an own-brand cereal bar that is quite the same thing.

Also Sainsbury's olive spread. Others just aren't as nice, including Bertolli! Luckily they sell it in enormous tubs.

(Also try not to buy ethically dodgy meat/eggs, but don't know if that counts!)

    Hmmm...

Oooo, I thought I was really good with compromising, but thinking about it, maybe not so much... :o

OH insists upon Kelloggs cornflakes, Hellmans mayonnaise, Heinz Baked Beans and name-brand tea-bags. My personal choices are free range eggs and good quality meat, I won't compromise on those. Oh, and fairy liquid. All the previous posters are so right, anything else just doesn't last as long! But all of the above I search for and buy it when it's on offer.

Cosmetics I won't compromise on either, but mainly because I used some non-brand stuff when I was younger and I had a series of eye/skin infections. However, how often do I buy cosmetics? :rotfl: I do use John Freida conditioner for my hair, anything else I've tried just doesn't get my hair in the same condition. However, I always get it when it's on offer though and it lasts for ages. I went shopping to an end-of-line outlet near my parents last October and found a load of JF conditioners for less than half the usual price thanks to a local chemist closing down! My parents were highly amused when I bought the lot. ;) Shouldn't need to buy conditioner until at least mid-2011, if not 2012! :p
