Royal Bank of Scotland

Hi

I have been reading about LLoyds Bank for travel insurance as they cover people with pre-existing conditions. I bank with the Royal Bank of Scotland and they have sent me a brochure that is called RBS Black Card. It is £200 and also has travel insurance in it. As my husband has had a heart attack I phoned to ask if he was covered under their insurance but they stated that unless I purchased the card they could not put me through to their insurance advisers. It is like a chicken and egg situation.

Could anybody tell me if this card is similar to the LLoyds card and if my husband would be covered on the travel insurance? As I bank with them it would be much easier if I purchased this card.

Many thanks for any answers received.

    try calling again... you should be able to find out all the terms and conditions of what you're paying for before you buy it...
  • Hi

    I have tried and tried. The woman I spoke to stated she thought it was stupid not to be able to get conditions of insurance but would not put me throught to insurance agents.

  • Will travel insurance cost you more than £200 elsewhere? If not then no point in taking out the RBS card. RBS though have changed the conditions on their Royalties account regarding travel insurance and anyone over 60 with any pre-existing condition even if it is under control by medication such as high blood pressure, will no longer be covered. I would imagine this card will be similar.

    Presumably there is a right of cancellation (do check). Assuming this is the case, you could:
    1. agree to take the card, and to pay the fee;
    2. find out all the applicable conditions, including insurance details;
    3. cancel if it is not suitable, or take it if it is what you need.

    Also check out the premium accounts and credit card offered by NatWest. My father is 67 and has various pre-existing medical conditions, but does a lot of travel using the insurance provided by NatWest through his account and gold card.

    I don't know if this will be much help for you but I had a look through their site for info.... the Black Card appears to be under RBS Private Banking and one of the benefits is Travel Insurace... it gives little info on their website:

    http://www.rbsblack.com/RBS-Black/02.asp?page=RBS-BLACK-CREDIT-CARD/BENEFITS/TRAVEL-INSURANCE

    There a section on the left that says "experience 3 month free" so maybe you could just get it to try it, especially if it's free. There's no contact numbers except for the number to call to organise an appointment...

    NatWest is RBS so I would imagine they have similar terms.

    Both my parents have pre-existing medical conditions and use Direct Line for their travel insurance. Direct Line is part of the RBS group of companies.

    Make sure your medical cover is a decent amount, some policies have a lower amount covered in the medical section than some other policies. If you fall ill and have to be repatriated (brought home) it can cost a fortune so best to make sure you have adequate medical cover

  • Be extremely wary of taking out this policy. I made a claim for theft of a mobile which was covered according to the current Travel Insurance Certificate and Policy (holiday was in December 07 and current policy received in November 07 with no mention of this exclusion or any start date) and they they turned it down quoting the previous year's policy. I have written numerous letters (mostly not even replied to by their agents Inter Group Claims Service) and made phone calls to no avail (they carry on quoting the previous year's policy) and am now going through the Financial ombudsman. After paying out £144 per year over 5 years and only making this claim - it is a total waste of money. Now got annual cover through the post office and am banking with First Direct:cool: - cheaper and better!

    ewanglasgow,

    you haven't paid £144 for the cover, you paid £144 for your bank account, and it comes with FREE insurance..
