Economy 7 or Economy 10

I'm wondering do I have E10? I'm in an all electric newish build flat with 2 storage heaters and one immersion heater. immersion heater is set to be on off peak, and the 2storage heaters are wired to the wall. they both turn themselves on at 10:30pm every night (at which time if u go to the cupboard where all the elec meters for the building are kept... u can hear a series of "clonk" noises at 10:30pm... presumeably all the meters switching to off peak!)... the heaters then turn themselves off at 7:30am each morning!
This is thus 10 hours of off peak leccy! Is there something wrong with our meters whereby we are getting more off peak than usual? Or are we on E10? Bear in mind the meters for the whole building are identical, and they only have 2 meter readings, a low and a normal.
If my arithmetic is correct 10:30pm to 7:30am is 9 hours(not 10 hours)
It is very unusual for Economy 7 to start as early as 10:30. That said if you have the older mechanical 'clock' the timing could be out by several hours.
The way to check is go to your meter at 10:30(after the clonks!!) and see if the cheap rate meter is whizzing around.
With E10 there are periods of cheap rate during the day.0 -
Worth noting that there are E9 meters and E8 meters in various regions. Sounds like you have got E9 to me. If you can advise your old board region (e.g. midlands now Npower) then it will be easy to tell you if it's available in your region.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0

Apologies it is ofcourse 9 hours... oops! I'm in Manchester, so I think this is either Northern/Norweb/Powergen (now eon)?0 -
There are 8hr ones in MANWEB's old board region as well as E10.
NORWEB (not sure if that covers Manchester which is normally MANWEB, unless it's a fringe thing) has various 8/11.5/12.5/14.5 timeswitcheable meters.
I wonder if you are something like E7 or E8 and your timeswitch has slipped and you get an extra hour or something. MANW & NORWEB have no E9's so I wonder if thats the case?:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
I'm in Manchester City Centre (Deansgate M3)... so not in a fringe... however looking at my Supply Number I'm in Supply Area Code 16... which is Norweb I believe?
Apartment was built in 2001 so I wouldn't have thought it's an old meter. Not sure what's going on then!0 -
Yeah, you are Norweb. Maybe you are on the E8 and it's slipped an hour.
You could also be E10, but you would know that since you would have a heating register an a 3 rate bill from your Supplier.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Okay I have an update... and it gets more unusual..
I noticed this for the past 2 days as my shifts at work have changed... the storage heaters (and the immersion water heater which is wired to turn on at off-peak) are kicking in at 10:30pm as I knew, but they turn themselves off at 12:30am (so 2 hours of off-peak leccy). Then they turn themselves on again at 2:30am, and turn off at 7:30am (so 5 hours of off-peak leccy).
Hence it would appear as though the timers are set for 7 hours of off-peak. Is it just me, or is this highly unusual for the off-peak electricity to be in 2 separate bursts??0 -

Do you have a radioteleswitch? They can supply the seven night rate hours in separate bursts. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Hi,
I live just outside Preston, also a Norweb area, and am economy 7. It's standard here that it's off peak 10:30pm - 12:30pm, 2:30am - 7:30am now, but I can remember when it used to be 11:30pm - 6:30am (think it changed in the v. early 90s). I find the 1st burst of off peak is perfect timing for a washing machine cycle, without having to stay up too late to put it on!0 -
The 16 area, ie the old Norweb (United Utilities), is now serviced by EON who are the meter operators for that area. You can be supplied by anyone but EON will fit the meter but UU still read them. EDF Energy and Powergen both support E10 in that area, but from your posts, it sounds like you are better off switching to E7. Some suppliers charge for an exchange but some don't so shop around. You may be on an old off peak or E7 Heatwise tariff which generally is hardly supported by anyone these days. This is because some suppliers required 2 supply numbers to bill both the main meter and timeswitch device. This also made changing supplier difficult.0
