  • I have just seen Jills's tip re enlarging the screen and I am so thankful to you Jill for this - I use a computer 50 hours a week and really struggle with some documents and this will be a godsend. I only wish someone had told me 7 or 8 years ago!

I just thought I would bump this thread up. Although it is a few years old (prices will be higher now ect), I have had it saved as a favorite long before I joined this site and look at it every now and then for inspiration. It just makes me more determined to do better with planning my grocery shops.

I agree SuzieY. I've had this in my listed subscriptions because I love to come back to it over time and remind myself of things Sammy did, Ie cut joints down to make them more flexible. Brilliant if buying them reduced. Loved the idea of slicing off chops from them.

  • So glad to have come across this thread, thank you Sammy Kaye! I've been slowly going insane spending easily £150 per week on food for 2 adults + 2 children. I had been browsing google for food on a budget and your post came up, it's very popular and so it should be! Some great help here to make drastic changes. In gratitude :)

    Hi Abikisses,

    Welcome to MSE!

While this thread contains many good ideas and inspiration please remember that it originally began 2008 so prices will be very different today and you may need to take that into account when planning your budget. Good luck with cutting back. :)

  • Perhaps someone could restart this thread with todays prices, can anyone do this, do you stick to your budget if so how, it would really help myself and others who have trouble:)

Have a look at the Grocery Challange sticky, lots of us on there are trying to stick to our budgets and there is lots of tips flying around. Have a look at July's and then the rest of the years thread by using the on board search facility.

Hi, I know this may sound like a really daft question but when you shop monthly do you freeze the joints of meat (say for sunday roast) and if so how long do you then have to defrost for?

I am trying to get a bit more organised and move from weekly to monthly shop, if I can, for main things then just shop weekly for fresh fruit and veg.

    Thank you!

I buy meat monthly and freeze myself at home. To defrost I just get out the day before and defrost in the fridge before cooking. Very occasionally I'll buy a small lamb joint in Iceland (much cheaper than fresh) which can be cooked from frozen if you forget to get it out, although I prefer to defost first.
