Oops thanked you by mistake :D

I used to work for Tesco, and was amazed at the number of coupons that certain 'regulars' would bring to my till.
The retailers know that not all of the coupons are *actually* used for the items they are intended for, but tolerate this because you are spending money with them and not a rival supermarket.
No supermarket would change this because it would be commercial suicide.

I agree that this is a moral grey area and that in an ideal world of course we would use coupons for the intended target item. But then again in an ideal world we could all afford what we liked and wouldn't need coupons either!?!

As long as you aren't taking the pee the supermarkets tolerate and (quietly) encourage the using of coupons in this way. These scanning checkouts are able to tell that you have or have not bought the item so they could stop you from using them. I know that the store's own coupons only allow you to use the coupon with that item, so you couldn't use a Tesco cat food coupon without buying their cat food. You might get away with using a Sainsbury's catfood voucher though if you bought Tesco's own....

Thanks for your input. I agree entirely with your comments. And just for the record it isn't just Tesco's.

And just for the record it isn't just the self scan. Many on here have letters from Head Office of certain supermarkets saying it is okay to use coupons - even if they haven't bought the product. Theft.........no.

I agree techno saver. I have been reading all these Tesco threads on how to max your clucard points using multiple accounts etc and feel now the bubble has burst this has put paid to customers like me not receiving incentives for extra points. Im not against taking advantage to a degree as I would not be looking at these threads but do think that this has been abused to a point were honesty is compromised.

Just so you know my view on multiple clubcard accounts. I have one and my wife has one. I do not agree with those who have 1/2 dozen accounts. However I don't think any less of them. My view is it is up to them.

Just be careful on the self scan - its watched by security as one of the more vulnerable areas of the store.

Stores can set their own SS tills to different levels but the majority will beep for authorisation after 30% of total is used in MOCS - after that every coupon will beep for authorisation.

The MOCS/vouchers do not disappear into a black hole - the SA can (and does!) open up the coupon slot and check coupons while you are stood there. The coupons enter the slot in order so its quite easy to see which ones you have posted/match you up with the CCTV footage even after you've gone. Also if you use a Clubcard then the coupons can be traced to you to.

Saying that if you are sensible and stay below your stores threshold, use only coupons in date and for items that your store stocks then you will be OK.

Just remember if you abuse the SS tills by using out of date coupons, posting blank bits of paper, using coupons for other supermarkets then your store will clamp down by taping over the SS coupon slots, its been done in others stores where people have abused the SS priviledge.

Not all Tescos let you use coupons in self-service tills, some of the ones in London make you call for assistance and the assistant checks your coupons before you can put them in and then tell you off when they don't match your goods!

    It's not always that easy!

  • The coupon checking thing is ridiculous anyway, yes, there are people who I disagree with because they abuse it and it affects us innocents just tryin to save a bit, but, im pretty sure these vouchers are claimed back from the manufacturers anyway, so who is really out of pocket, not us, the retailer or even the manufacturer because it is usually to kick start sales for a new product and the cost of putting these vouchers out WILL belive me be incorporarated into the retail price anyway!!
  • Also, sometimes the coupons don't fall into the container properly and the till thinks you haven't posted the coupon. First port of call is to blow into the slot and second is to give it a shove with your clubcard (but only after making it obvious you have tried to blow first!)

I buy a jar of coffee from Mr T.
I give him a coupon for £1 off loo roll and £2 in cash.
He then sends the loo roll voucher off and will get, I assume, at least £1 off the manufacturer.
If Mr T or other stores didn't accept the voucher then fair enough they are playing by the rules. But this isn't the case so who is doin wrong.
    Me and Mr T.

Apologies for the rant but I'm fed up of the 'holier than thow' posts that this subject throws up with alarming regularity.

Not only would Mr T get his £1 back from the manufacturer (for the loo roll) :o he gains an extra 2p (+ sometimes) as a 'handling charge' so Mr T Wins!!

I usually use the coupons for the item I am buying, that way there is no come back to you from the store staff.
The internet coke plus coupons have been a bonus however , though I now have a coke mountain ( the fizzy drink, not the white powder stuff ) in my house. These cancel £2.49 off the shopping amount, yet are on sale at Tesco for £1.99 and Asda for £2.00, hence it knocks an extra 49p each time off the costs of my other items.
I bought 2 packs of coke, 2 packs of fruit shoots and the grand total was 30p to pay...
The supermarket redeem the voucher for £2.49 from coca cola, plus whatever handling fee they also get back, coke sell more pop and I save more money

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'm impressed you can do that Oggyoi. One of my local Tesco tores has REAL trouble if I buy an item for £1.99 and the coupon for that product wants to deduct £2.49. I've even been told with a tesco brand coupon for a free cheese that I had to buy something else to make the coupon work. It always involves calls to the supervisors, overriding things when they figure out what to do. One enthusiastic SA even told me I couldn't use the coupon as it was over 10% of the value of the total price, even though the coupon was clearly for a free item from the store. As with all things it's store dependent. Tesco HO policy is use as many coupons as you want in your transaction as long as they are different to each other. Stores ignore what HO say and decide what they're going to accept. You DO feel very smug though when the self scan beeps at you when you're using a pile of coupons for items you've bought and the SA crossly watches as they have to authorise each coupon individually.
