Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has any advice for me?
I have a Virgin Pay-As-You-Go mobile phone, but I hardly use it because I'm terrified of how expensive it is (about 35p a minute).
I used to use the 118888 free text service, which was great, but now it's finished and I can't find another free text company (my texts cost 25p each if I have to pay for them).
So the mobile phone is firmly OFF at the moment, but this seems crazy. I'm sure some of you clever folks have some ways around the expensive charges (maybe it's just to get a new phone and a new network!)

you can send txts for 4p each and to international destinations from vgsmail.com - when u send the txt iy has your existing mobile no in it so the receiver does not know it hasnt actually come from your mobile !!

Don't know why you are paying that much, I am on Virgin P A Y G and the costs are 15p per minute for the first 5mins each day then 5p per min for the rets of the day.

Could it be mobile to mobile you are talking about, as I think they are 35p per minute cross network

Maybe someone knows of other good and free web based txt services for sending txts to UK mobiles (or internationally as well !!)

Please list the sites and any things to watch out for...

Virgin is 35p per minute to other mobiles (x-net) but I thought texts were only 10p each or 3p to other virgin mobiles. I would check their website if I were you.

I would have alook at CardBoardFish http://www.cardboardfish.com/ in particular http://www.cbfsms.com/ if you want to use the web to send SMS messages to mobiles. I think the service is free for UK mobiles - not sure about international texts.

Another benefit of Virgin PAYG is they other free Voicemail!!!! Also if you are on 1899/18866 you can use the 0207 mobile/cable access no,s to make cheaper calls from your mobile eg at weekends once you have hit the 5p rate.you can call crossnetwork mobiles at 8p a minute (5p Virgin + 3p say 1899) plus connection charge of course. Instead of 35p a minute.

The cheapest way would appear to be using one of the dial through 0871 access numbers from a provider like https://www.dialwise.co.uk.Calls to these numbers on Virgin PAYG cost 15p a minute.
