  • Most people want an HD recorder to record which HD source?

I think we are getting off topic - High def recording is another topic altogether but the fact is the Blue Ray have won the player format war. I doubt there will be a rush to push a recording format that has already lost the format war - that would have the shareholders very worried.

PS - I have neither format (I'm waiting for freesat High Def hard drive recorders) but I think this deal is a bargain.

Not off topic at all. It just lessons the Blu-ray argument by a big factor. Myself & most people I know haven't had a Playback only machine for years. ALL my DVDs are played on my record & wipe DVD recorder/player upscaler. The only use I have for my DVD PLAYER is Divx & I could easily (& do) use the computer for that.

I am also waiting for the Freesat but I want to record HD permanently onto a disk as well as watch wipe.
    Nice to save.

I was under the impression that the reason for HDCP (and indeed the reason that they demand HDMI for upscaling sources) is so that you'll be unable to record HD material. So, am I incorrect in this assumption? If so, then what's the point in a HD recorder?

To record HD programmes from BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5... etc, etc, etc, (obviously when it is available, & some now are,& it's increasing), just as we have for the last nearly 30 years with recorder/players.
    Nice to save.

What you are not telling people (or you yourself may not know) is that this ONLY applies to US releases, when the films are released in the UK, Europe or in Japan they can often be distributed by companies who have no such ties, and as such there are a number of "BluRay only" titles that are avaliable on HDDVD.

Often? I dont think so, you mean very very rarely.

Heres a nice list of the top HD films from Amazon.com,

Care to show the US Blu Ray Exclusive releases from Disney, Sony, Lionsgate and Fox that can be purchased in the UK on HD DVD?

I paid £300 for my first regular dvd player, with no discs bundled. I paid £300 for my first video come to think of it, and that was in the days when £300 was a LOT of money,

I'm going to buy one of these now. I'll switch to blu-ray or a player that supports both formats when they're sub £100.
Your wait will not be that long, as both LG ans Samsung have just brought out Blu-ray recorders for PCs that will also play back HD discs. and the start price is arounf £150 and will be sub £100 once they start to sell. Seems like the major hardware manufacturers are backing BR too.;)

PS blanks cost around £9 ish at mo, and also likely to drop in price. Sony obviously dont want a repeat of Betamax :D

Read this and wind your neck in

The main Jist is as follows

All of the BD-only studios seem to have movies released as HD DVD titles in Europe and elsewhere, but they don’t use their real names in these other countries. Even better, many of the very first batch of BD releases are available.
    Wikipedia: Blu-ray Released Titles
Below are titles I found just using the two links provided by Mr. Collins, but I am sure further digging will reveal more. I have provided Wikipedia links to articles about the respective companies, studios, and films. In each Wikipedia film article, a column on the left provides production information including which studio released the title, but as rights change hands, I have grouped the movies based on who currently owns rights to release the titles using information kindly provided by www.blu-ray.com, a US-based web site.
