I paid £300 for my first regular dvd player, with no discs bundled. I paid £300 for my first video come to think of it, and that was in the days when £300 was a LOT of money,

£120 is a great price for a taste of what HD has to offer. If you've got a LCD tv, or a projector, a bit of cash in your pocket, and you want to see your panel working at its potential, then why not?

I'm going to buy one of these now. I'll switch to blu-ray or a player that supports both formats when they're sub £100.
    ::Quidco.com - £1100 in 11 months. Kerr-ching! ::

Please be warned that the battle of the formats for the replacement to the humble DVD looks like it is being won by the Blu Ray disk and therefore for HD DVD it will soon be game over.

See for instance a recent article in The Times or The Economist.

You may find one day that you cannot get what you want in HD DVD, and therefore I would recommend Blu Ray, but maybe waiting for a while.

    You are absolutely correct.
BluRay (BD) has won the war - hence the price of HD DVD players and disks tumbling.

However, I'll be waiting till the autumn when Bluray 2.0 is released ... better interaction and upgradeable firmware. :D
Give it a couple of months and the price of BD players will start to tumble as manufacturers try to offload the old kit onto the unsuspecting !

Then wait 3 years for a winner to be announced.

You might want to check out which film distributors have done deals with who.
HD DVD has umm .. pretty much no backing.

That's great news for those who don't intend on buying any new DVDs, but if you do, knowing that after May 70% of ALL new DVDs released will be on Bluray only.... Well, it definitely stops me from buying a HD DVD player!

I was going to respond to this but I can't be bothered:p

    Absolute bargain:cool:

HD DVD has the backing of a load of people who are buying the players at bargain prices in Europe and the USA.

Blu-ray has a bunch of game players with nothing to play on their PS3s so all they can do is rubbish HD DVDs on forums like this:p

I don't have either player at the moment as it's pointless paying that kinda money right now, but either way anyone who actually thinks HD DVD still stands a chance is just being blind really. Lets not forget that Toshiba's HD DVD player was already making a loss at its £200+ selling point. Now they're simply just trying to get in as much as they can.

Check the links to the sales figures I posted for the US last week. HD DVD discs have now dropped to seemingly only 15% of the market. I know it's not nice to admit you've bought an obsolete item but, even before the Warner announced Bluray discs were outselling HD DVD by 2:1. Stating that the US is buying players is just silly really when you look at the sales figures. I think it's a bit wrong to mislead people like this as not everyone constantly has a spare £120 sitting around to go and buy a HD player, only to find in 6 months time Toshiba abandon the whole thing. At the very best, we should at least be making sure people know the facts so they make an informed decision.

  • The backing of many buyers will not overcome the fact that the vast majority of future releases will be only on Blue Ray, whatever some think of that format. The race IS won, unless you accept that the future of film is actually downloading (because hard drives etc are huge & cheap) and neither disc format has a very long term future. Sorry - off topic.

That said - this seems a bargain if you want to experience the beauty of an HD picture at a cheap cost. I understand why you would as I am sad enough top leave BBCHD on my Pace HD box because I love the picture.

Who gives a monkeys which HD format has the movie titles. Most people want a HD DVD RECORDER. Now if Toshiba get a relatively cheap one out soon so you can record from the BBC & other HD content it will win the war. Watch & wipe or keep what you want is more important to the majority of people than buying or hiring movies.
    Nice to save.
  • Ignoring the whole HD DVD vs Blu-Ray battle; this is a bargain for those that just want a DVD upscaler.

What you are not telling people (or you yourself may not know) is that this ONLY applies to US releases, when the films are released in the UK, Europe or in Japan they can often be distributed by companies who have no such ties, and as such there are a number of "BluRay only" titles that are avaliable on HDDVD.
