Have wondered about this for a long long time now but i feel something should be done.
If you fancy a nice refreshing drink on a hot day what better than to grab a 500ml bottle of your fav fizzy thirst quencher and pay somewhere between 80p and a quid for the priviledge. But why does a 2 litre bottle of the said same fizzy stuff cost around £1.20???????????? Or if you buy own brands (cos tesco fizzy orange is every bit as nice as fanta) 44p!!!
Why are these cans and bottles so exorbitantly priced?????

You're not paying for just the drink though. You're paying for ease of use and manufacturers know this is a valuable commodity which can push the price up higher than need be.
Also 2 litres of juice will only cost so much to bottle and pack whereas 4 x 500ml which is the same amount of juice will actually cost more to bottle as there will be 4 plastic bottles/lids etc to take into account.
I agree it's OTT though, so I usually buy 6 small bottles (perhaps on offer in a muti pack), then refill them from larger bottles. Ease of use....only cheaper.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Also remember that these drinks are mostly water so the % of the cost that is production is small compared to the % cost that is packing/transport.

We pay for a brand name more than a product. Its the same with f'in bottled water.I remember when this was just a little website! :money:0 -
Piece of news news drink wise, I was out on the town Friday night and my friend (we'll call her lightweight) wanted a glass of water (!) and so I asked for a lager and a water. 1.50 was all I was charged as they give the water free now in this club, was very impressed.Panda xx

At my old university the catering services (big business expoiting students) replaced all the canned drink machines with bottled ones then charged £1 each for the bottles!
We were all very annoyed as the cans were 50p each at the time.
The university has been good in that they installed water coolers throughout the university and I must admit I'd rather drink the cool water than the coke and I'm quite a fan of pepsi.
All they need now is some squash on tap. I'd be happy to pay 10p just to add abit of squash to the water.0 -
Quick piece of useless trivia that I picked up from a mate last night. He once went on a trip to a Coke bottling plant, and he 2l bottles are actually the same bottle as a 500ml bottle, just expanded more. So the cost for each would be exactly the same.
Don't believe me? Try squeezing one of each, and then weighing it. The larger bottle is thinner, and the weights are the same.I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

I think it is probably that the cost of packaging is significantly more than the cost of the product being packaged. Lets face it, how much is 500ml or 2L of Cola actually worth?
Interesting point about the size of the bottles .. gues what I will be doing tonight?

If you go to a concert in Milton Keynes Bowl it costs £2.50 for a 500ml bottle of water
and as they confiscate anything other than water and any bottles larger than 500mls at the gate they're making a killing.0 -
Try buying these 500ml from stores like Spar, Jacksons, Costcutter etc and they are nearly always overpriced at between 90p - £1. However go into a small independent store and you will often find them price marked at around 75p !!!
If you are unlucky enough to find imported drinks as your only oprion. (with foreign writing and an english ingriedients sticker)
then haggle cos these babies cost nealry a third less to buy then the english stuff. My Shop Is Your Shop0
