Hi - I have had quite a few foreign paying students staying, who come over here to learn English. They are here for 2-3 weeks and eat with us and the same as us.

However, I meal plan well and use Lidl an Asda for most things. The German students liked all the food I cooked, Lasagne, Chilli con carne, Fish pie. I also did good old fish and chips and on a sunday I would do a roast Chicken - rubber chicken that went further.

For a packed lunch I would make sandwiches, fillings - tuna and sweetcorn, ham salad, leftover chicken salad, cheese and tomato, egg and bacon, etc. A bag of crisps, a piece of fruit and a cheap choccy biscuit. For a drink I would give them squash put into a small water bottle. They were asked to bring back the bottle everyday so that it could be refilled.

Of course as a previous poster wrote, do find out their likes/dislikes/allergies etc. Most of my students weren't at all fussy, one lovely Italian girl had to have a Gluten free diet. I was given extra money for her, but she bought a lot of food with her - bless.
As a Nurse I am used to special diets and some supermarkets have a very good range.

I hope it works out well - we have made lots of lovely friends and many still keep in touch. I have a visitors book for them to sign when they leave and it is a lovely reminder of their stay. :)
  • OK thanks everyone!

Just to clarify the student is here on a work placement whilst studying for a degree. They are 22 so is not 'a child' and are earning a wage whilst here. (accomodation paid by employer to us) which is why i was trying to figure out what to provide. If i treated them the same as us they would have a potion of soup/sandwich and fruit like DH but thought this may not seem like alot. Also no mention in contract of providing snacks just 3 meals

it is quite different feeding an adult to feeding a child - and not like they don't have their own money for treats etc

I will have a chat to them when they arrive and see what they expect!

I usually go to Aldi/Netto will have to venture out to Lidl and check it out, I would like to get some german goodies to make them feel welcome.

    Thanks

Ah okay, well give them the same as OH (maybe a little extra until their first pay day if they seem hungry). I guess like an au pair is treated the same as the rest of the family, but has a wage if they want to buy extra things.

  • Why not take them for a trip to Lidl and get them to pick out the food they like.

They will probably be able to read the labels better than I can:rotfl:

Id say go to lidl to and buy some german cold meats, rye bread, pickles and quark
but really you should just be giving them the same sort of food that you already prepare, im sure the student will appreciate it

Hi, I'd give them the same as your OH, that way its the three meals a day. Just the same as you have.

Obviously, as said, check their likes and dislikes but other than that, just the same.

Being a german myself the one thing I would get from lidl's are the bread mixes. I bet the student will appreciate it, although english bread is ok there's nothing better than a sourdough bread with a decent crust.
Sauerkraut is very stereotypical and not everybody likes it.So I would recommend the cold cuts of meat like salami or ham. Cheese is also very popular.
Once the student is here I would sit her down and go through what she likes to eat. She'll probably want to try allsorts of english food which is not that common in Germany like bacon, baked beans, roast potatoes...
If you do get something typical German before the student comes over don't get too upset if she doesn't like it. Happened to me when I first came over here and my ex mum in law bought a stollen specifically just for me. I told her I don't like it and she got upset because she spent money on it which she couldn't really afford. I felt so guilty I ate some in the end.
