in that case if she doesn't eat what she's given then stuff her. You've been considerate and tried to meet her needs, if she's 24 then she's more than old enough to prepare her own food if and when she's hungry and DEFINITELY old enough to know how to behave. I'd contact the liasion officer about the troubles you've been having with her, even though you are paid for having her she is still staying in your home and should be considerate of yourself and your family. If her family is strict i'd very much doubt she'd get away with this at home x

You could just tell her to ship out. I'm sure you will be able to get another student. I once threw a student out because of bad behaviour. I don't think it matters that she is over 18, you do not have to put up with what she is doing.

In my experience, flexing your muscles lets the organisers know you will not put up with such nonsense! They are more careful about the students they send you. Because of the shortage of good homes in my area, it is the family at a premium - not the students.

I'd give her a plate of steamed veg every night.. and maybe leave a bit in the pan for her later.. it can always be used next day after overnighting in the fridge.

I'd probably tell her to cook her own food as well if she is being a big PITA.. There is no way on earth I'd be cooking more than one meal a night.. eat it or starve.. my family, friends, fmaily, visitors, lodgers and pets.. same rule applies.

Though when I come.. will you not feed me salmon? I hate it.. it repeats like nobodys business!!

Does it work though? Eating nothing but boiled/steamed/stir fried veg??

well think it kinda of works for her, she `s like a pencil with the wood shaved off as my dear old mum would say god rest her soul lol! however the drinking of vodka, smoking like a chimney and staying out till all hours cant be doing her any good, actually without her half tonne of make up she puts on everyday she looks as my nephew would put it a "skanker"

  • Hi All,

After some advise, we are taking on a foreign student and we are expected to provide breakfast lunch and dinner.

I do packed lunches for DH and kids (i work from home) but I am wondering what would be deemed reasonable to provide the student with.

THe kids have a convensional packed lunch (sandwich, baked crisps, apple, carrot sticks, peice of cake and OJ) and OH takes a potion of HM soup or a wrap/sandwich.

Would just providing a sandwich/soup and piece of fruit for her lunch be reasonable?

I don't want to provide snack type food or it could cost me fortune!!!

ALso any german recipes to make them feel at home would be appreciated!:D

I give mine a sandwich, piece of fruit, small cake and a packet of crisps. Plus a Tesco value orange drink. Ask her what fillings she likes, as some of them don't like cheese or ham I have found!
You can buy saurcraut and other german foods in Lidl, but if she is coming here, try traditional English. I've also found most of them love Lasagne!

Why would you serve a foreign student less than your own children?!

You do get paid for taking the student and that includes thier meals, surely?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

When my family had an exchange student, she took exactly the same lunch as my sister did. She was more than happy to eat what we did, my sister checked there was nothing she couldn't/wouldn't eat and my mum just cooked whatever, one day she cooked with my mum how to do authetic chinese :D She was also very impressed by PG tips and value packet noodles... my sister took loads over to her when she went to China!
Anyway! Do you know the child? Is it like a swap where your child will then do an exchange to germany? Or do you get paid?
I would see what he/she eats, portion wise, at dinner and give her a lunch to suit. If you think they need more just add an extra sandwich.

German tastes aren't that different, they might even appreciate some good old english cooking :) You could pick up a pack of brautwurst and jar of saurkraut from Lidl(very stereotypical, Lidl also do bitesize stollen, you could pop these or slices of normal stollen in lunch boxes), and find a good/easy potato dumpling recipe. Ask if there's anything they absolutely don't eat? Most of us have that one thing that makes out stomach churn, and being in a foreign country with people you don't know and presented with your worst nightmare can be so uncomfortable- eat it and gag or go hungry and look rude?
