Not sure if it is the same with all the keys, but with the Suzuki Alto keys you get a little strip of metal with a series of numbers on it - that is the information they need for the coding of the keys, lopped a fair bit off the price of getting a new key for that car.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

I'd imagine that after six years it doesn't really matter.
