You can kit yourself out with a pretty good brand new re-useable kit from ebay for less than half of that, and then of course you get the second year free too.:money:

I was advised to get enough nappies for a couple of days but NOT to get all of the same because those particular ones may not be suitable for you.

You can get them really cheaply on www.usednappies.co.uk as well and they are not all used! Some of them are just surplus to requirements, for example there is an ex nappy adviser on there that sells off the stuff she no longer needs.

I've got mostly prefolds but I've also got a few different shaped ones to see if they are any better for my baby. We'll see...

As I've not spent £'s on them I won't mind if I have to change to another sort once the baby is born (off Freecycle, Ebay or UsedNappies of course!)

Thats a real shame Jess but as you say sometimes things are more important than money.

My daughter came 4 weeks early so now we are home from the hospital - the challenge can begin :)

Away today to pick up free nappies at sainsburys and free nappy wrapper from argos - so off to a flying start :)

    Hope everyone is well.

    Hi

Can I please just ask how you get the free nappy wrapper from Argos? I got an email from Bounty with a linky, when I click on it, it takes me to an Argos page asking for my town or postcode but when I type this in and hit enter, it says there's an error and just takes me to main Argos homepage
I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....

This may sound a wee bit thick but what's a prefold nappy?. Have now had our first scan and junior is kicking and rolling around like mad so am going to start buying a few bits, Can anyone tell me roughly what clothes to buy to start off with (baby due september)- I haven't got a clue! Ta!

A prefold nappy is a shaped nappy as opposed to a terry square.

Personally I wouldn't buy any clothing. You are bound to be given tonnes as soon as baby is born as people just love to buy baby stuff for you. Worst case scenario buy baby a few vests and sleepsuits so that you have a few things to carry you through until all the visitors come laden with gifts.

Seriously though, eventhough we hardly know anyone here, we were given loads of gifts as well as 2 huge suitcases of second-hand stuff and in hindsight ...

Congratulations, my dd was born Sept, to be honest for the 1st week or so she was in baby grows all the time, and we got brought a lot of items, people always buy 1st size, get a few winter essentials, you need 0-3 and 3-6 mths, dont buy too much they grow so quick, from memory took dd away at 10 days old, I had 4 prs bottoms a couple tops and jumpers and dungarees, think we had a couple of demin dresses, always go for something thats easy to wash, and that you ca mix and match with.

    Hope that helps x

Just a thought for anyone expectign, Morrisons have got a really gd offer on, Advent steam sterliser with bottles, teats etc - microwave steam unit. £12.49 instead of £24.99

They are an absolute god send, the one I had took 2 or 5 mins on microwave, unopened held sterlie for 2 hrs, or if you had a power cut, or microwave packed up, that unit can be used as a cold water sterilieizer with tablets.

The other thing i would highly recommend is from poundland, fold up changing mat (£1), really handy.

Goodness, you're so lucky. I had a few gifts, but people are wiser now, so buy larger sizes. I still have a few bits he hasn't grown into yet. So when he was born, I had the regulation 6 vests, 6 babygrows. Then I was in hospital for two weeks and OH wasn't too good at keeping up the supply of clean clothes, so within a few days he had to go to tescos to stock up. Don't even get me started on the muslins - you'd think 40 would be enough.

People also tend to assume that it being your first baby you may not want used stuff. I had to wait months for anyone to give me their old baby clothes. Now I have a generous collection, but still find myself wanting more. Such as SIL gave me trousers and t-shirts, but I like keeping J in sleepsuits, so I still shop. On ebay though, unless I can't find something.

Ooh, excuse me, time for a not-so-asleep dream feed...

I got a bounty bag in hospital (newborn) and the voucher was inside.

Picked it up yesterday - seems ok - the cassettes cost £11 ish and last a month i think.

I will prob use the free cassette and not bother unless it is really really good :)

Thanks all, think I will just buy a few bits to see us through- and also drop some fairly large hints to friends that have recently had babies to pass their clothes on! lol

A prefold nappy is a flat nappy (like a terry) that you fold (like a terry - but I think they have different/slimmer folds) before covering with a wrap and putting on baby. You will need a nappy nippa or nappy pins with them. They are very cheap (£2 each) and quick to dry.

Hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I'm slowly learning. ;)

Oh and everyone check if their local council does discounts or grants for real nappies. If you live in London you might be eligible for a £40 grant from here. This is almost enough to cover the costs of a tots bots day pack. Or the majority of the cost of prefolds and terries.

I'm getting very excited at the thought of all these nappies. :o
