How to port my number from 3 to 3 (new contract, not an upgrade)

Am I right in thinking if I request a PAC code and switch to, say, o2 PAYG, I can then call o2 2 months later and request a PAC code and switch to my new 3 contract? Is it possible to get around the 2 month wait (or are there companies that will help me switch my number directly within the same network) or are 3 able to move the number internally once my new contract is up and running?

This isn't absolutely essential to me (wouldn't have signed up for a new contract in full knowledge that mobile numbers are difficult to move between contracts on the same network) but it'd be very good if I could find a way :).

  • I have ported from TMob to Voda and then after a couple of days complained to Voda that service was poor and ported back to a new TMob contract.

Thanks for that it led me to Wikipedia's article on PAC codes, which has no mention of this 2 month rule, nor does OFCOM, so it looks like I don't have to lose my number for 2 months (which was gonna make it really impractical - lots of people have my number lol).
  • In a few months time the networks have to reduce the time taken to port a number from 5 working days to 2 working days.

Some, such as Orange, Voda and 02 are using delaying tactics by insisting they post the Pac codes out which seems to now take a week and is something I will be taking up with Ofcom.

If you are on PAYG there should be no reason to get your PAC code immediately.
