Say NO To Debt Harrassment

Bit late getting here, but my ploy to thwart unwelcome callers is:

    Me: "Hello"
UC: "Hello; may I speak with Mr ******"
    Me: "Who is calling?"
    UC: "This is *******"
Me: "Just a moment; he's upstairs. I'll go fetch him."

At this point, go do some shopping, or play some Iron Maiden (loudly) while the UC is on 'hold'. After around 20 minutes or so, check the phone to see if the UC is still 'holding'. They never are. Repeat as necessary.

To maximise this effect, register (free) with the Telephone Preference Service, at http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ - this may help to curtail 'unessential' callers, unless you've previously given permission for them to contact you in this manner. Otherwise, Caller Display is also handy, and there's the old back-up of "I'm not in at the moment...". This last doesn't always cut ice, but acting stupidly does ensure at least one of the parties involved has a good laugh.

I am just wondering if there are issues with a breach of the DPA here? Any suggestions would be gratfully received as I would like to post a letter tonight. Thanks again.

    Yes, I'd say so.

We had one poor chap in our office that was being chased by debt collectors and none of us would answer his phone because of the harrassment we got from the jerks on the other end of the line.

They should not discuss any of your business once they are made aware they aren't talking to you.

IMHO they shouldn't be allowed to call you at work at all as it soon became apparent that this poor lad was in trouble just by the number of callers ringing him.
